These beautiful purple-colored ears can be found on the slopes of the plains, on the edges of forests and along the banks of swamps and rivers in the Eastern European part of Russia, Siberia, and the Far East. Due to a wide range of properties, burnet is used not only in medicine, but also in the light and chemical industries, and even in agriculture.
Burnet belongs to the Rosaceae family. The plant got its unusual name due to its ability to quickly stop bleeding. The wide geography of distribution gave the burnet many names. Among the most famous are: redhead, bebrenets, gryzhnik, goroshnik, button, snake potion, twig, owl grass, black grass, cones, wild and forest mountain ash, etc.
In botany, burnet is defined as a herbaceous, perennial plant that blooms from June to August, up to 1 meter high, with purple flowers and a nut-like fruit. The plant has up to 20 varieties with similar pharmacological properties. The most famous relative is the burnet blackhead or small burnet.
Some herbalists believe that it is better to dig up the roots of a miraculous plant in the midst of flowering, while others recommend waiting until the seeds ripen.
Healing properties of hemorrhagic
Tannins and organic substances, vitamin C, macro and microelements, which nature has generously endowed with the crumble, make it a truly universal medicine. The roots of the plant contain starch, gallic and ellagic acids, triterpene saponins. These compounds have a pronounced antitumor effect. Gallic acid has antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antiparasitic and antimutagenic and cardioprotective properties.
Triterpene saponins are capable of releasing hemoglobin without destroying the membranes of erythrocytes. Burnet leaves are no less useful, as they contain ascorbic acid and natural antioxidant pigments – carotenoids. It is no coincidence that traditional healers use them to prepare all kinds of tonic drinks.
The first to notice the healing effect of burnet were Chinese and Tibetan doctors, as well as Siberian healers. They used drugs from burnet to stop bleeding and diarrhea. In the Middle Ages, even the aroma of flowering burnet was considered healing. So, in the 17th century, doctors recommended that mothers of children with neurological problems take them to the field.
The plant was included in modern scientific medicine thanks to the research of pharmacists from Irkutsk and Tomsk.
Contraindications of blood clots

Reviews of doctors about the burnet officinalis
Svetlana Barnaulova, PhD, cardiologist of the highest category, herbalist, hirudotherapeutist:
– The beautiful and sounding name of this plant speaks for itself. Burnet stops the blood, so its main use is to stop bleeding. Decoctions and infusions of burnet are effective in uterine, intestinal and even pulmonary bleeding. A high concentration of tannins fights well with reduced blood clotting, so the plant can be used for thrombocytopenia and thrombocytopathies in children and adults and, like nettle, with low blood clotting. Once this plant was used to treat severe infections, up to cholera.
Elena Korsun, Ph.D. head Department of Phytotherapy, ICM RUDN University, Head of the Educational and Health Center at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine:
– Burnet is effective in angina, various forms of tuberculosis with hemoptysis and to suppress malignant tumors. Tannins reduce intestinal motility, so it helps with diarrhea, dysentery and other gastrointestinal disorders. The use of the plant gives a positive effect in the treatment of uterine bleeding of various etiologies, cancerous and precancerous diseases and infections of the genital organs. The herb also helps with heavy periods.
