Does blood in stool mean colon cancer?
I am 55. Recently, while passing a stool, I saw traces of blood on the toilet paper. Does this mean I have colon cancer? ~ jurek
The presence of blood in the stool indicates gastrointestinal bleeding – if blood is present on the surface of the stool and on the toilet paper, it probably comes from the end of the large intestine. Benign (polyps) and malignant lesions located in the rectum and the anal canal, but also hemorrhoids can bleed. In order to find out the cause of the bleeding, please see your GP or oncologist (a referral to this specialist does not require a referral). The doctor will take an interview, examine you with a finger through the anus and, if necessary, refer you to an endoscopic examination (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy).
