The blood type may influence the course of COVID-19 – such suspicions were already experienced by doctors in 2020. This was also suggested by the conducted studies. Scientists are still studying this issue. The results of another work appeared in the pages of PLOS Genetics at the beginning of March. This time, the scientists looked at the proteins present in the blood. As it turned out? People with blood type A should especially familiarize themselves with the results.
- A study of over 3 Proteins found in the blood showed that six of them are potentially associated with the risk of severe COVID-19. One protein from this group determines the blood group. It’s the ABO enzyme
- Eight blood proteins have also been identified that may protect against complications of COVID-19
- The researchers note that the study does not link a specific blood group to the risk of severe COVID-19. However, they remind that previous analyzes showed that among patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection there are more people with group A. “This suggests that it is worth examining this blood group more closely”
- Further research will be required to confirm the results and test their clinical application

The influence of genes on the critical course of COVID-19. Tests of thousands of proteins in the blood
What determines the severe course of COVID-19 – this issue has been occupied by scientists since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The stakes are high, identifying the factors will help to quickly identify patients for whom COVID-19 may be particularly dangerous.
It is already known that the body’s reaction to infection depends on age (advanced age increases the risk of complications), comorbidities from which the patient suffers, including possible obesity. The critical course of COVID-19 can also be influenced by genes (they affect the response of the immune system). Previous studies have found genetic differences between the blood proteins that shape the immune response in healthy people. This prompted scientists to search for proteins associated with the risk of hospitalization, the need for respiratory support, and the likelihood of death from severe COVID-19.
Scientists looked at thousands of proteins in the blood. The study used Mendel’s randomization method. “It uses trait-related genetic variants and measures their causal relationship with the disease, avoiding confounding environmental factors such as lifestyle,” explained co-author Dr. Alish Palmos of King’s College London in Medical News Today. The research results appeared on March 3 in PLOS Genetics, a peer-reviewed scientific journal on genetics.

Blood type protein can influence the course of COVID-19
After examining over 3 Scientists have identified 14 blood proteins that influence the course of the disease: eight, which, depending on the variant, may protect against complications, and six, which may increase the risk of complications – it also turned out that one of these proteins determines the blood group. It’s about the ABO enzyme. Studies have shown that it influenced both the risk of hospitalization and the need for respiratory support and the likelihood of death.

The researchers point out that the exact blood type associated with an increased risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19 cannot be determined from the results of these studies. “Nevertheless, it is more likely that influenza A, B or a combination of A and B are associated with a higher risk of hospitalization,” write in PLOS Genetics. The researchers also note that the results of their research are in line with previous work that suggested the importance of blood type to the risk of death. They also indicated that there are more people with blood group A among the patients, which proves that it is worth examining this blood group more closely.
- The need for blood is increasing. Where should I return her? Who can donate?
It is worth mentioning here the research conducted in the fall of 2020 by the American Society of Hematology (ASH). The results suggested that people with blood group 0 are more resistant to coronavirus infection and may have the disease more smoothly. Scientists recalled, however, that there are many other factors influencing the body’s response to infection.

Finally, the words of the co-author of the described study, Dr. Palmosa: «To confirm our findings, clinical trials must be carried out on patients» He notes, adding that one such study is the COVID-Clinical Neuroscience Study, “which investigates the causes of various aspects of COVID-19.”
