Bloating in babies – what causes them and how to prevent them?

Flatulence and gas in a baby are the effects of digestion, which often explode in a baby as much as in an adult. They often arouse anxiety of parents. Although loud and frequent, bloating and gas are normal at this stage in a baby’s life. The causes of flatulence in a child can be traced to intestinal colic, allergy to milk, poor mother’s diet, incorrect feeding technique. What are the symptoms of flatulence, what are the most common causes? How can you help your toddler and what to do in case of flatulence?

What are the symptoms of bloating in babies?

Bloating along with the accompanying gases in a child make parents fear of intestinal colic. The toddler flexes, bends his legs, cries, has a bloated belly, releases unpleasant gases. This is often accompanied by abdominal pain, belching, frequent defecation with loud gas, or regurgitation.

What are the causes of bloating in babies?

The most common causes of flatulence called dyspepsia or simply indigestion in babies are:

  • poor diet of a nursing mother,
  • improper technique of breastfeeding,
  • greedy sucking and the accompanying swallowing of air by the toddler,
  • lactose intolerance,
  • intestinal colic,
  • diverticulosis,
  • irritable bowel syndrome,
  • poor diet of a toddler,
  • celiac disease, or gluten intolerance,
  • parasites in the digestive tract,
  • overfeeding
  • stress.

A breastfeeding mother should pay special attention to the selection of non-allergenic products, such as broad beans, beans, cabbage and without hot spices. While feeding the baby, she should be relaxed and calm, because her emotions affect the baby, who, feeling anxious, sucks greedily and swallows too much air. When the toddler grows up and starts eating different products, it is worth expanding his diet gradually to eliminate the stuffing products.

How to deal with bloating to relieve the baby?

To help your child in the best possible way, you need to know the exact cause of bloating and gas. If lactose intolerance is the problem, wait until the immature digestive system has strengthened. In more difficult cases, a special milk mixture will be needed. Abdominal massage and warm compresses will also soothe. Perform the massage gently, with circular movements, you can also massage the area around the navel using fennel oil. Fennel, chamomile or barley tea is also effective. Eliminate peas, beans, lentils, cauliflower, bran, carrots, raisins, plums and apricots from your diet and the diet of an older infant. Make sure your child eats regularly and does not overeat. In the case of abdominal pain, special drops with a high content of simethicone will help. They allow gas to escape freely and reduce bloating. When bloating is accompanied by constipation, glycerin suppositories will be helpful. They work very quickly and effectively.

When should you see a doctor?

If the abdominal pain is not transient, and bloating constantly accompanies the toddler and does not allow him to function, and the diet and home remedies are not effective, you should see a doctor. The doctor will order appropriate tests to determine the cause of bloating and excessive gas. If the cause of bloating turns out to be a disease of the digestive system, special treatment will be needed.
