Black vodka: what is made of + 10 popular brands

Black Vodka or BlaVod, as black vodka is often called, unlike the traditional “little white” was invented not by Russians, but by the British.

An unusual drink was first presented to the public in 1998 by Mark Dormano. The original product quickly gained popularity in clubs and youth parties in England and New York. In Russia, the drink appeared much later – in 2008.

Taste and strength

Black Vodka is no different from classic vodka, but in color it is its complete opposite.

Although the color of the drink is not jet black, but rather inky blue with a hint of green. At the same time, BlaVod remains transparent and does not look cloudy. It does not have any specific smell.

Composition of black vodka

Before the modern version was offered to consumers, manufacturers experimented for a long time, setting themselves the goal of making vodka, and not a cocktail based on it.

Acquiring a dark shade, the drink should not have received an unusual aroma, taste, texture or stain the tongue and lips. Most dyes were not suitable for these purposes until the creators tried “black catechu”.

“Black catechu” is obtained from the bark of the acacia of the same name (Acacia catechu), which grows in South Asian and some African regions.

In ancient times, local residents used this root for dyeing fabrics and processing leather.

Apart from the bark, Black Vodka contains nothing out of the ordinary. The exact recipe and technology depends only on the manufacturer. As an alternative to black catechus, berry extracts, humic extracts from peat and other natural raw materials are used.

How to drink black vodka

You can drink black vodka, like regular vodka, in its pure form and with ice. But most often the drink is included in spectacular layered cocktails.

It is curious that when mixed with some ingredients, black vodka changes color: when orange juice is added, it becomes green, from water – silvery, cranberry juice – purple.

The unusual properties of the drink are especially popular during the celebration of Halloween.
