We know you’re on the hunt for the perfect black eyeliner! The Woman’s Day editorial team will help you make the right choice.
MAC, Eye Pencils, ebony shade, 990 rubles
– Not tonal, not mascara and not even a balm is in every girl’s cosmetic bag. Black eyeliner! This is what the eyes won’t look expressive without and the perfect Smoky won’t come out. I tried many pencils until I found the one – perfect!
Expectations: it is practically impossible to do without a black pencil in creating makeup. Bring the lower eyelid, make a beautiful cat arrow and shade the smoky eyes. The pencil should not be too soft and hard, it should show perfect durability and, of course, shade well.
Reality: I have been using this pencil for a year now. My love for a professional brand made me buy another black pencil, and at first I was a little disappointed. The product turned out to be hard, but, as it turned out, it goes away after several applications. The first thing I noticed was cost effectiveness! I used no more than 4 cm Eye Pencils in a year.
The second – the tool keeps lethal! With a base, without a base, in tears and in the hot sun, the Mac pencil never let me down. The tool is easy to apply and cool to shade (after a few applications, I repeat).
Rating: 10 of 10 points. I recommend this pencil to everyone for the perfect makeup.
Jane Iredale, eyeliner, black, 1024 rubles
– Eyeliner, black or dark gray, is one of the main must-haves of my minimalistic makeup bag. It also includes mascara, concealer and eyebrow shadows, and in the fall and winter also mineral powder. I approach the choice of eyeliner very responsibly, as it should combine several qualities at once. I have mixed experiences with the Jane Iredale pencil.
Expectations: When choosing an eyeliner, I’m only interested in three things: durability, pigment saturation and my lack of an allergic reaction to it. The manufacturer Jane Iredale promises that the pencil has a very soft structure and good composition, and therefore does not irritate the skin. In addition, natural pigments are said to be highly durable.
Reality: I’ll start with what I didn’t like. The only and significant disadvantage is durability. I applied the pencil on the “bare” skin of the eyelids, slightly moisturized with a cream for this area. Literally in a couple of hours, the arrows began to swim, and by the end of the day they slipped completely, forming unaesthetic “bruises”. Yes, the durability of this pencil disappointed me. But in all other respects it is perfect. For me, it is important that with a pencil it was possible not only to draw arrows, but also to draw inside the eye, along the mucous membrane. There was not yet a pencil that would not cause discomfort: usually my eyes always water after such a make-up. But not at this time.
Jane Iredale really doesn’t irritate the eyes! The manufacturer’s website says that due to the absence of dyes in the composition, it can be used on any part of the face.
I also really liked the composition! Jojoba, meadowfoam, mango, shea oils and candelia wax form the basis of this wonderful product. In addition, all Jane Iredale cosmetics are not tested on animals and are PETA certified.
Rating: 7 out of 10. Withdrew points for endurance. The pencil is too soft to be applied to the upper eyelid. Most likely, it should be used in conjunction with a good makeup base.
Eveline Cosmetics, automatic Kajal Mega Max eyeliner black, 159 rubles
– I love discreet makeup, preferring to use black mascara and strict retrospectives. However, in order to draw neat, straight lines, you definitely need to find the perfect pencil; and eye markers, of course, outperform their regular counterparts in this sense. Among the automatic options, by the way, sometimes very interesting specimens come across, and whether the Kajal Mega Max eyeliner from the Eveline Cosmetics brand will be as good, I have to find out.
Expectation: I wanted to find my perfect make-up product that would not spread, be applied with perfect clear lines and would not leave the eyelids all day long. How else? It is very sad when the arrows “slide” out of your eyes after 5-6 hours or leave incomprehensible black streaks, turning you into a panda.
Reality: I continue to argue that good beauty products don’t have to cost a fortune. Among the available products, you can find good and, most importantly, effective options. What am I doing this for? And besides, the pencil (the cost of which, for a minute, is about 159 rubles!) Is once again proof of this.
I drew arrows every morning after painting the eyelashes with two layers of black mascara. The pencil lay flat even without a base, confidently drew charcoal-black lines and steadfastly withstood all adversity during the day. I just have a habit sometimes, thinking, rubbing my eyes accidentally (and that’s it, goodbye, graphic arrows and an intricate make-up). This time it was about the same. Until I caught myself thinking that I might already have all my face in black stains. It turned out not to be so. The pencil remained in place, but became a little paler. In addition, I have very sensitive skin, prone to allergies, so I choose the products with particular pickiness. This product of decorative cosmetics did not cause any discomfort and quite got accustomed to itself.
As a bonus, the automatic pencil does not need to be sharpened every time; the expense of the funds turns out to be quite economical. The pencil is removed, by the way, without any problems using a make-up remover or, at worst, plain water.
Rating: 9 out of 10. I think this is a decent product for its price. Yes, it can smudge a little if you scratch your eyes, but it can happen with any remedy. The only thing, for those with oily skin, I advise you to use this product on a special base.
Eyeliner with a brush Crayon Khôl from Clarins, 1350 rubles
– Black eyeliner is something that almost none of my mornings can do without. For several years of drawing arrows in front of my eyes, I have so filled my hand that it is always strange for me to hear the words of my friends’ surprise, how can I draw them so smoothly and beautifully. In fact, this is a matter of practice – once. And a good, comfortable pencil – two. Let’s talk about him!
Expectations: Despite my long “career” in drawing arrows, not many pencils have been in my hands (and remain). Somehow I always successfully found the one that suited me, and cheated on him only forcibly – either he disappeared on sale, then they gave me another one, and I switched to it … But with my last find – with a pencil of one very budget mass market brand – I’ve been using it for two years for sure. It suits me so much. I draw the usual modest everyday arrow only on the upper eyelid, and it is important for me that the pencil is not soft and does not melt. The fact is that I hate it when a pencil is imprinted on the mucous membrane of the lower eyelid. Firstly, it is ugly and sloppy, since it is printed unevenly. And secondly, it visually reduces the shape of the eyes. And constantly looking in the mirror and wiping up this misunderstanding is no pleasure. Alas, until you try the pencil directly in front of your eyes and walk around with it for several hours, you will not find out about these important nuances, whether a pencil is right for you or not.
Reality: Clarins’ Crayon Khôl pencil intrigued me with its blacker color – carbon black. The blending brush at the end of the pencil is a nice bonus. But more about him later. So, in the morning I drew arrows (the pencil seemed softer than mine) and went on business, since it was a day off. Alas, the pencil has become the embodiment of everything that I do not like and do not need at all in a black everyday eyeliner. All day it was constantly imprinted not only on the mucous membrane of the lower eyelid, but also above the fold of the upper eyelid. And by the end of the day, I realized that black marks-stains had formed around my eyes, which did not decorate them at all. It was then that I remembered about the shading brush and realized why such a pencil is perfect … For smoky eyes makeup! With proper application and shading of the pencil and shadows, its ability to spread and print a little will come in handy! So in the place of the manufacturer, I would present it like a pencil to create the classic smokey ice effect! By the way, the pencil is suitable for the sensitive skin of the eye contour, tested on myself.
Evaluation: for smoky eyes the pencil deserves 10 of 10, but for ordinary shooters, alas, 3.
Yves-Rocher eye contour pencil, 430 rubles
– I rarely use pencils. When I do bright makeup, I like to emphasize the lash line above the upper eyelid or make small arrows. In everyday life, I only manage with ink. Since I didn’t have a lot of eyeliners, there isn’t much to compare with. To the layman’s eyes, the pencil seemed quite good.
Expectations: the manufacturer says that this eyeliner is three in one: it transforms and emphasizes the look, gives expressiveness. Well, it’s a very formulaic description that doesn’t say anything. I’ve learned much more from my own experience.
Reality: the pencil has a soft, thin lead suitable for use as an eye contour pencil, eyeliner or eyeshadow (you can shade it with your finger or with a brush). It is bold and shaded well, but it may not keep a clear line. It is better not to apply a pencil on a greasy eyelid or eyelid in a foundation, it will lose its shape very quickly. But under the shadow, you can safely apply it, since you still paint it over. This is exactly what I need him for most often. So there are no questions.
Evaluation: 8 out of 10, if evaluated objectively, the endurance is lame. Not all girls apply it only under the shadow.
