Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) poisoning – symptoms and first aid

This shrub grows in forests and thickets. The berries, bark and leaves are poisonous. Poisoning with unripe berries; preserves of ripe fruit cooked in open containers do not cause poisoning. The poison contains cyanogenic compounds that are likely to disrupt the metabolism and irritate the gastrointestinal tract.

Symptoms of poisoning

There are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, breathing disorders – frequency, depth of breathing, increased heart rate.

First aid

It consists in removing the poison from the gastrointestinal tract – provoking vomiting, purging.
