Glaucoma is a disease that leads to the loss of the optic nerve and ultimately to blindness. The disease may be congenital, but acquired forms are also becoming more common. It turns out that one of the reasons for the occurrence of this serious ailment may be taking birth control pills.
According to research by a team of scientists from the USA and China, women who take the pills for more than three years are more than twice as likely to develop glaucoma! Unfortunately, it is still unknown which ingredient of the contraceptive pill has such a negative side effect.
Doctors urge women who regularly use hormonal contraception to check their eyesight more often.
