Bioracef 500 mg (leaflet) – dosage and side effects of the drug

Bioracef is a medicine used, inter alia, in in otolaryngology, dermatology, gynecology and in infectious and lung diseases. The preparation has anti-infective and bactericidal properties, it is used to treat e.g. respiratory tract, skin and urinary tract infections. Bioracef is available as film-coated tablets and can only be obtained with a prescription.

The indications for the use of Bioracef

The active substance in Bioracef is cefuroxime with antibacterial properties. The preparation is indicated for the treatment of infections in adults and children after 5 years of age. Bioracef is given to treat infections of:

  1. acute streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis,
  2. acute bacterial sinusitis,
  3. exacerbations of chronic bronchitis,
  4. cystitis
  5. pyelonephritis,
  6. uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections,
  7. acute otitis media,
  8. early-stage Lyme disease (Lyme disease).

Dosage of Bioracef

Acute streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis, acute bacterial sinusitis:

  1. Adults and children weighing more than or equal to 40 kg: 250 mg twice / day.
  2. Children weighing less than 40 kg: 10 mg / kg body weight twice / day (max. 2 mg twice / day).

Exacerbation of chronic bronchitis:

  1. Adults and children weighing more than or equal to 40 kg: 500 mg twice / day.

Cystitis, pyelonephritis, uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections:

  1. Adults and children weighing more than or equal to 40 kg: 250 mg twice / day.
  2. Children weighing less than 40 kg: 15 mg / kg body weight twice / day (max. 2 mg twice / day).

Acute otitis media.

  1. Adults and children weighing more than or equal to 40 kg: 500 mg twice / day.
  2. Children weighing less than 40 kg: 15 mg / kg body weight twice / day (max. 2 mg twice / day).

Early Lyme Disease (Lyme disease).

  1. Adults and children weighing more than or equal to 40 kg: 500 mg twice / day.
  2. Children weighing less than 40 kg: 15 mg / kg body weight: twice / day (max. 2 mg twice / day).

Bioracef – Contraindications

A contraindication to the use of Bioracef is hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients or to cephalosporin antibiotics.

Bioracef – warnings

  1. A Jarish-Herxheimer reaction may occur when using Bioracef to treat Lyme disease. Its symptoms include fever, headache, chills, muscle and bone pain, itching, nausea and vomiting, and skin rashes.
  2. Caution is advised as patients allergic to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics are at increased risk of developing hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins (allergic cross-reactions).
  3. Bioraciously should be given to children who cannot swallow tablets, they should be swallowed whole (do not crush or break), due to its size.
  4. Long-term use of antibiotics may cause the overgrowth of resistant bacteria and fungi (especially in the elderly).
  5. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before using the drug.
  6. The drug has no influence on the ability to drive motor vehicles and operate machinery.
  7. Caution should be exercised if potent diuretics are used concomitantly due to the risk of an adverse effect on renal function.

Bioracef and possible side effects

During treatment with the drug, the following may occur: Candida overgrowth, eosinophilia, headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain, transient increase in liver enzymes. Positive Coombs test, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, vomiting, skin rashes.

In addition, with an unknown frequency, the following may occur: excessive growth of Clostridium difficile, haemolytic anemia, drug fever, serum sickness, anaphylaxis, Jarish-Herxheimer reaction, pseudomembranous colitis, jaundice (mainly congestive), hepatitis,

hives, pruritus, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis.
