The CEO of the German group BioNTech, which together with Pfizer created the first vaccine against COVID-19, predicts that new mutations of the virus resistant to it will emerge. In an interview for the Financial Times, he explained that in 2022 it will be necessary to prepare a new preparation that will deal with them.

Ugur Sahin, chief executive of BioNTech, told the British daily Financial Times that they will appear as time goes on mutationswhich can bypass the body’s immune defenses against the current vaccine.
New vaccine in 2022?
Sahin estimated that the new preparation will most likely be needed next year. – A new vaccine is not needed this year. But by the middle of next year, the situation may be quite different – he predicted.

Sahin said the current variants COVID-19, especially Delta, were more contagious, but not so different that the current vaccine would be ineffective against them. However, subsequent mutations may require a new version of the vaccine. “This virus will stay with us and continue to grow,” he said.
