I expect that in the coming weeks, the infections will go up significantly, and the deaths – a bit – says biologist Dr. Rafał Mostowy in an interview with PAP. According to the expert, COVID-19 is likely to become an endemic disease, and only Delta may remain of the known variants.

  1. The latest data from the Ministry of Health say about 2. 12 cases of coronavirus in Poland. There were 29 deaths
  2. For 99,6 percent. Currently, the Delta variant corresponds to infections in our country
  3. It may be that of all the current variants, only Delta will remain, which causes infections also in vaccinated people – says the evolutionary biologist Dr. Rafał Mostowy
  4. Currently, our country has 51 percent. fully vaccinated people
  5. If all Poles were vaccinated, I would feel even more comfortable – adds the scientist

Coronavirus in the world. Only Delta will remain?

As expected by experts, in the fall there was an increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Since the end of September, almost every day, an increase in new infections has been recorded in Poland. However, the number of deaths from COVID-19 has decreased compared to previous epidemic waves.

– We can definitely expect further increases in infections because we have entered the disease season. Anyway, this increase was predicted. I expect infections to rise sharply in the coming weeks and deaths a little. There will not be as many deaths as last year, Dr. Rafał Mostowy, an evolutionary biologist from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, told PAP.

The lower number of deaths is the result of vaccinations and the fact that some people have already undergone COVID-19.

As an evolutionary biologist, I can say that we are unable to predict the evolution of the coronavirus. It may be that of all the current variants, only Delta will remain, which also causes infections in vaccinated people, although they are less dangerous. But new variants may arise within the delta variant itself – we don’t know that. That is why it is important to continue epidemiological studies, through genetics, of what is happening in Poland and in the world – said Dr. Mostowy, when asked about how the coronavirus might behave next year and in the years to come.

Coronavirus in Poland. The worst is behind us

In his opinion, the difficulties in predicting the number of deaths caused by SARS-CoV-2 are the result of, inter alia, that it is not known how many people have passed COVID-19 and developed immunity naturally.

  1. Poles are less and less afraid of the coronavirus. And they don’t want to get vaccinated

According to the biologist, the worst is probably behind us. There will be more waves of infections, but they should be weaker. There is also no need to panic because there are vaccines and we have learned a lot about COVID-19 treatment.

– As a vaccinated person, to whom all relatives were vaccinated or suffered a disease, I feel in a much better place than a year ago. If all Poles got vaccinated, I would feel even more comfortable – said Dr. Mostowy.

According to the expert, COVID-19 is likely to become an endemic disease (a persistent disease, such as influenza), but many questions related to the pandemic – including whether to introduce new restrictions – do not have a clear answer, and the discussion about the pandemic it is less and less scientific.

  1. Why does eastern Poland not believe in a vaccine? “It’s more complicated than it sounds”

– From a social point of view, it is very important that people do not die from COVID-19. Vaccines not only reduce the risk of infection, but most of all prevent the severe course of the disease and complications after the disease. Those who have not been vaccinated should be persuaded, said the biologist.

He also added that a completely new pandemic of another disease could emerge at any time.

– This has been talked about for decades, but no one seems to be listening – noted the scientist and concluded that any infectious disease can cause complications and none can be ignored.
