He was born in Paris on April 1, 1934 in the family of Vladimir Pozner, who emigrated with his parents from the USSR to France in 1922, and the Frenchwoman Geraldine Lutten. In the summer of 1934, Geraldine and her son left for the United States and returned five years later.

When the Nazi army occupied France, the family left for the United States. Posner Sr. worked at the US Army Department and actively collaborated with Soviet intelligence. Soon this became known to the FBI and in 1948 the family thought about urgent emigration to France, but they were refused. The family moved to the GDR.

There was a school for the children of the diplomatic mission workers. In 1949 it was closed and the teenager again had to get used to the new staff of the school for the children of political emigrants. Graduates received priority admission to any university in the Soviet Union.

In 1952, the family moved to Moscow, and the young man passed the exams at Moscow State University for biology, choosing the specialization “human physiology”. However, he was not enrolled as a representative of the Jewish nationality and “unreliable”. Although Posner always considers himself French.

The father connected all his connections, and the young man became a student. During his studies, he met Nikolai Drozdov. The acquaintance grew into a strong male friendship.

After receiving his diploma, Vladimir translated scientific articles and English poetry. His translations attracted S. Marshak’s attention and he invited a talented young man to his place.
