Biography of Hieromonk Photius
Vitaly Mochalov was born on January 1, 1987 in the city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod). Zodiac sign – Capricorn. Capricorns are people of strong will, they achieve their goals. They never get tired of learning and improving.
From childhood, the boy was associated with music and dreamed of becoming a composer, writing his own music and songs. During his school years, Vitaly studied vocal and piano at a music school, sang in the school choir. As a teenager, he attended church school and church choir.
After graduating from an incomplete high school, Mochalov entered the music school at the department of music theory. He dropped out of the music school because of the move with his family to Germany (the city of Kaiserslautern). There he learned to play the organ and continued to sing.
Three years later, Vitaly returned to Russia. At the age of 20, he decided to go to a monastery, for which he moved to the city of Borovsk, Kaluga region and entered the service at the Borovsk Svyato-Pafnutyevsky monastery.
After taking the tonsure, he became hieromonk Photius. And in the monastery, his love for music did not leave him – he sang in the choir of the monastery. Soon he began attending the lessons of the vocal teacher Viktor Tvardovsky, who taught the monastery singers.

Voice 4 season project
How difficult it was for the monk to get on the stage of the project! It is a risky business for a priest and contrary to the canons of the church. But the priest made a firm decision to participate in the competition, having received the archimandrite’s blessing for this.
The brethren of the monastery, together with Metropolitan Kliment of Kaluga and Borovsk, gladly supported Photius’ participation in the show.
At blind auditions for the show, he performed Lensky’s Aria from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. This is a rather difficult composition to perform. Grigory Leps turned to Photius, whose team included an unusual competitor.
