Father Dmitry Smirnov
Dimitri Smirnov was born on March 7, 1951 in Moscow. We can say that he followed in the footsteps of his ancestors. His great-grandfather was a priest, but his grandfather served as a White Guard officer.
As a child, Dmitry Nikolaevich studied at a school with a physics and mathematics bias. Then he entered the Pedagogical Institute in Moscow, choosing the art and graphic faculty of the correspondence department.

In 1978, Dmitry decided to follow the path of his great-grandfather and entered the Moscow Theological Seminary, which is located in Sergiev Posad. He graduated from seminary in 2 years as an external student. Further, in 1,5 years, she graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy, after which he was appointed a priest in one of the Moscow churches.
In 1991 he passed to serve as the rector of the Church of St. Mitrofan of Voronezh. He is currently serving there. The parishioners immediately fell in love with Father, their number grew. With the growth of the number of parishioners, he becomes the rector of six more churches in Moscow.
Since 2001, he has combined his main work in the church with work in the Synodal Department, which deals with the interaction of the armed forces and law enforcement agencies.
In 2009, Archpriest Demetrius was honored with the right to wear a miter. He received many awards and orders. Of these, the most important can be called the Order of the Monk Nestor the Chronicler. It was received in 2004.
In 2013, he leaves his post in the Synodal Department and receives a new one – the first deputy chairman and chief of staff of the Patriarchal Commission, where the main issues of family matters and the protection of motherhood are resolved.
By the way, Dimitri Smirnov supported and in every possible way promoted and defended traditional family values.
He advocated family integrity and opposed abortion, all forms of unhealthy forms such as pedophilia and homosexuality. He also has an ambiguous opinion about atheists. As he once put it, their life has no meaning.
He was straightforward and steadfast in his faith. But sometimes his sarcasm is not always understandable to people, but those who understand what he was talking about are even more pleased with these statements.
Sometimes he can speak out somewhat harshly and emotionally. For some, this can cut the ear, but his statements are always fair and came from the heart.
Its main goal is to save the souls of its parishioners and set them up for righteous worldly deeds. For example, his statement about the cohabitation of a man and a woman: “A woman in a civil marriage is a free prostitute, not a wife.”
Cause of death of Dmitry Smirnov
In the 1990s, Smirnov suffered from diabetes mellitus. There were problems with the heart and legs.
In the spring of 2020, he contracted the coronavirus infection COVID-19. Before being infected, he underwent heart surgery. A few weeks later, Dmitry Nikolayevich recovered and planned to undergo rehabilitation until the fall.
At the end of September, he was again hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the N.N. Sklifosovsky. He was diagnosed with a brain disease. Recently, he moved in a wheelchair.
On October 21, 2020, Dmitry Nikolaevich died at the age of 69 as a result of an exacerbation of a chronic disease. The funeral service was held on October 23 in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. He was buried behind the altar of the Church of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos in Petrovsky Park in Moscow.
Conversations with Father Dmitry Smirnov
The father led a fairly active social life. He was a frequent guest on the TV program Conversations with the Father. He also hosted radio programs. He had his own blog, where he expressed his positions and views.
Dimitri Smirnov was married. His daughter Maria Dmitrievna Smirnova is a philologist by education. She also works, like her father, at the temple. A teacher at one of the children’s homes, she dedicated her life to faith. His brother Ivan Nikolaevich Smirnov is also a famous person, but in a musical environment. He became a jazz guitarist and composer.
