Biodroxil caps – indications, contraindications, dosage, side effects

Biodroxil capsule is a systemic antibacterial drug. Beta-lactam antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. The active ingredient is cefadroxil. Biodroxil in the form of capsules is prescribed by a doctor on prescription.

Indications for taking Biodroxil caps.

Biodroxil capsule is a beta-lactam antibiotic recommended for the treatment of the following infections caused by bacteria sensitive to cefadroxil: upper respiratory tract infections, especially pharyngitis and tonsillitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections.

Biodroxil capsules are not indicated for the prevention of rheumatic fever. The drug should not be used in severe systemic infections in which beta-lactamase-resistant cephalosporins are more effective.

Biodroxil capsule and contraindications

Contraindication to the use of the drug Biodroxil caps. is hypersensitive to any component of the preparation or to other cephalosporin antibiotics (also if hypersensitivity to cephalosporins is suspected).

Dosage Biodroxil caps.

Adults, adolescents and children weighing more than 40 kg:

  1. The usual dose is 500-1000 mg twice a day (every 2 hours). In skin and soft tissue infections and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, 12 mg once a day.

Children over 6 years old weighing less than 40 kg:

  1. The usual dose is 500 mg twice a day.
  2. In younger children, Biodroxil kaps should be used in the form of an oral suspension.
  3. Dosage adjustment is not necessary in elderly patients with normal renal function.
  4. For people with kidney problems, your doctor will prescribe a dose depending on the degree of kidney failure and the severity of the infection. If the creatinine clearance is greater than 50 ml / min, no modification of the dosage schedule is necessary. If the creatinine clearance is less than 50 ml / min, the doctor will usually extend the dosing interval or reduce the dose. If the creatinine clearance is between 26-50 ml / min, your doctor will usually prescribe a dose of 500-1000 mg every 12 hours. If the creatinine clearance is between 11-25 ml / min, your doctor will usually prescribe a dose of 500-1000 mg every 24 hours. If the creatinine clearance is less than 10 ml / min, the usual dose is 500-100 mg every 36 hours.

Take Biodroxil orally. The capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. The preparation can be taken regardless of meals. Treatment with Biodroxil capsules should usually be continued for 2-3 days after symptoms have resolved. For streptococcal infections, the antibiotic should be taken for at least 10 days.

Biodroxil caps – warnings

  1. Before using Biodroxil capsules, be sure to consult your doctor and inform him if you have ever experienced hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins or other drugs or allergens.
  2. There is no information on the effect of the drug on the ability to drive and use machines.
  3. If you use high doses of Biodroxil capsules or if your treatment is prolonged, your doctor will usually conduct regular checks of your blood count, kidney function and liver function.
  4. If diarrhea occurs during or after treatment, do not treat it yourself, but consult your doctor.
  5. Long-term use of antibiotics may cause the overgrowth of resistant bacteria and fungi. If you develop new bacterial or fungal infections while taking the drug, consult your doctor immediately.
  6. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before taking the drug.

Biodroxil capsule and other substances

Please inform your doctor if you are taking the following substances:

  1. drugs with bacteriostatic action (e.g. chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics, erythromycin, tetracyclines, sulfonamides),
  2. probenecid,
  3. aminoglycoside antibiotics, polymyxin B, colistin,
  4. diuretics (loop diuretics),
  5. oral anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin) or antiplatelet drugs
  6. cholestyraminy,
  7. contraceptive preparations.

The following side effects may appear: eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia / neutropenia / agranulocytosis (decrease in white blood cells / neutrophils / neutrophils / significant decrease in all granulocytes), nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, rarely pseudomembranous colitis, slight and transient increase in liver enzymes , cholestasis and liver failure (very rare), joint pain, fever, interstitial nephritis, hypersensitivity reactions (rash, drug fever, pruritus, urticaria).
