Big belly during pregnancy, causes

From the first days of pregnancy, expectant mothers want their tummy to grow faster, but sometimes its size exceeds expected. A large belly during pregnancy can be both a sign of the norm and indicate deviations.

Big belly during pregnancy: causes

The growth of the abdomen is due to an increase in the volume of amniotic fluid, the uterus, as well as the growth of the fetus itself. The doctor should take systematic measurements from the 20th week of pregnancy. The shape of the abdomen is normally similar to an egg; in primiparous women, the tummy may be slightly raised and pointed upward, and in multiparous women it is lowered down.

A large belly during pregnancy can be a consequence of weight gain

An oversized belly can be in several cases:

  • multiple pregnancy: a large belly in this case is the norm;
  • metabolic disorders in a pregnant woman, diabetes mellitus;
  • severe swelling;
  • significant weight gain;
  • large fruit;
  • polyhydramnios;
  • swelling of the placental tissue and, as a result, an increase in the uterus.

After the tests, the gynecologist will be able to identify the cause and prescribe the appropriate treatment to normalize the patient’s condition.

  • A large belly during pregnancy can be the result of diseases of the endocrine system. The first step is to take a blood sugar test to exclude diabetes mellitus, as well as conduct an ultrasound scan.
  • Overweight women need to revise their diet, exclude high-calorie foods, try to consume more vegetable fiber, do not forget about moderate physical activity: walking, yoga for pregnant women, swimming.
  • Reducing fluid and salt intake is required to combat puffiness, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist. Increased swelling in the second half of pregnancy can be a signal of gestosis, which is dangerous for the mother and child, even death.

Every pregnancy is different, so don’t be nervous and compare yourself to other pregnant women. Only a gynecologist can estimate the size of the tummy of a future mother.
