“Bifidumbacterin”: how to give to newborns?

“Bifidumbanterin” is a drug that contains bifidobacteria and has a mild antidiarrheal and immunomodulatory effect. It normalizes the intestinal microflora, and therefore is often prescribed for newborns suffering from the immaturity of the digestive system.

Indications for the use of “Bifidumbacterin”

“Bifidumbacterin” is a fairly effective and safe drug that is used without age restrictions for the treatment of:

  • dysbiosis and intestinal dysfunction
  • intestinal infection
  • diathesis and other allergic diseases (as an additional remedy)
  • abdominal pain, flatulence and other disorders in the work of the gastrointestinal tract
  • hypotrophy (underweight) in debilitated children

In addition, “Bifidumbacterin” is useful as a prophylactic agent in the treatment of antibiotics, hormonal drugs and other drugs that can cause disturbances in the digestive system. Also “Bifidumbacterin” is indicated for babies who are bottle-fed (especially if there are problems with the selection of milk formula).

Very often “Bifidumbacterin” is prescribed to newborns who often and profusely regurgitate after eating, have stool retention, suffer from intestinal colic or bloating. The drug can even be used in premature babies.

How to give “Bifidumbacterin” to a newborn

“Bifidumbacterin” is produced in different forms, however, for newborns, it is preferable to take the drug produced in vials. The powder should be diluted with boiled water, breast milk or milk mixture. The only condition: the dilution liquid must be at room temperature. Otherwise, some of the bacteria will die and the drug will not have the desired effect.

One bottle containing 5 doses of the drug requires 50 ml of liquid. If “Bifidumbacterin” is prescribed for the prevention of intestinal dysbiosis, half of the medication received will be enough for the baby at one time. If a child needs treatment for diathesis, infection, abdominal pain, etc., you should give him everything that happened after diluting the powder. Bottle-fed babies can be given the medicine directly from the bottle. For children who are accustomed to breastfeeding exclusively, it is better to give the drug from a spoon.

If “Bifidumbacterin” is prescribed for the baby as a preventive measure, 1-2 doses of the medicine per day will be enough. For babies who need treatment for dysbiosis or other disorders in the digestive system, the number of doses of the drug can be increased to three per day. The duration of treatment with “Bifidumbacterin” is 7-10 days, but if necessary, the course can be extended or shortened.
