The comfort of sleeping is influenced not only by a well-ventilated bedroom or fresh linen, but also by the company. Adults who share a bed with a partner or spouse get better sleep than those who sleep alone – informs the online supplement to the magazine “Sleep”.
Sleep with someone or alone?
Research on the relationship between sharing a bed, sleep, and mental health was conducted by researchers at the University of Arizona (USA). They analyzed data from the Sleep and Health Activity, Diet, Environment and Socialization (SHADES) study on 1007 working-age adults in southeastern Pennsylvania. They used tools such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Apnea Assessment.
The results showed that those who shared the bed with their partner most nights reported less insomnia, less fatigue, and longer sleep times than those who said they never slept with their partner. Sleepers with their partner also fell asleep faster, slept longer after falling asleep, and had a lower risk of sleep apnea. However, those who normally sleep with their baby have reported a greater severity of insomnia, a greater risk of sleep apnea, and less control over their sleep.

The researchers also found that sleeping with a partner was associated with lower rates of depression, anxiety and stress, as well as greater social support and higher satisfaction with life and relationship. On the other hand, sleeping with children was associated with greater stress.
Sleeping alone can lead to depression
Sleeping alone was associated with higher rates of depression, less social support, and poorer life and relationship satisfaction.
“Sleeping with a partner or spouse has tremendous benefits for sleep health, including reducing the risk of sleep apnea, worsening sleep insomnia, and improving overall sleep quality,” said lead author Brandon Fuentes of the University of Arizona department of psychiatry.

“ Little scientific research deals with this, but our findings suggest that whether we sleep alone or with a partner, family member or pet can have an impact on our sleep, ‘added study co-author Dr.Michael Grandner, director of the Sleep and Health Program University of Arizona.
