Beta-glucan is one of the constituent parts of dietary fiber. It can be found in the cell walls of yeast, fungi and cereals. As it turns out, it is used not only as an ingredient in food, but also in medicinal and care preparations.
Beta-glucan – what is it?
Beta-glucan is a component of the dissolving part of dietary fiber. The most popular source of this nutrient are cereals and some species of edible mushrooms. Beta-glucan has been called an ingredient of functional food because its beneficial, healing effect on the human body has been scientifically confirmed several times. In addition, it has a caring effect, which is why it is often found in cosmetic compositions
Beta-glucan – effect on the human body
It has been proven that beta-glucan can have a beneficial effect on the body in various ways. Scientists believe that it may have an effect on lowering blood cholesterol levels. Research on this issue and attempts to explain it are still ongoing, but some hypotheses are emerging about it. It is possible that beta-glucan binds bile acids, which inhibits their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, and therefore must be excreted from the body. Excess fat, including bad cholesterol, is effectively removed from the body, and in addition beta-glucan creates a film on the intestine that prevents the excess from being absorbed.
Another action beta-glucan is to lower blood sugar levels, which helps to prevent overweight and obesity. Beta-glucan prolongs the action of the hormone responsible for the feeling of satiety, and thanks to the stickiness of fiber, the stomach is emptied a little slower. This helps to control the appetite, and thus means that we eat less food, less calories, and as a result – we do not gain weight. Speaking of the digestive system, it is worth mentioning the regulation of intestinal function – beta-glucan, as well as fiber itself, increases the frequency of bowel movements, thanks to which the body does not retain the remains of undigested food. It is an important ally in preventing the development of colorectal cancer. Preparations containing beta-glucan they are used to increase immunity, activating cells of the immune system. We recommend, for example, Reishi mushroom extract – a powdered dietary supplement which is a source of beta-glucans.
Beta-glucan – who is it recommended for?
Preparations and food products containing beta-glucan should be used by people with a weakened immune system and suffering from disturbed intestinal function. Contraindications to eat beta-glucan practically nonexistent. This ingredient can be found in Japanese shiitake mushrooms and in some species of oyster mushrooms. Grains are good sources: barley, rye, wheat and triticale, but also oat bran, maize and rice. In addition to food products, it is worth including supplements in the diet: preparations containing beta-glucan are available at pharmacies.
