How to choose an inexpensive sewing machine

Household sewing machines fall into two categories: electromechanical and electronic. It is not difficult to distinguish them from each other: in electromechanical machines there are fewer operations and their selection is carried out using a selector switch; electronic ones already have a display, and operations can be selected using the buttons on the machine body.
There are a lot of sewing machine models on the market right now. And the range of prices is also very large – from 5 thousand to 500 thousand rubles. “How do they differ from each other?”, “Which one to choose for the home?” – you ask. In fact, everything is very simple.
The more sewing operations and other additional functions in the machine, the more expensive it is. Let’s analyze them in more detail.
1. Sewing operations – the types of stitches that the machine can sew. These are straight, elastic, decorative stitches, overcasting operations, buttonholes. In a budget car, each of them will be presented in a single copy. The more expensive the machine, the larger and more diverse the set of lines will become.
2. Ability to adjust the stitch length and zigzag width for sewing operations. In an inexpensive machine, as a rule, it is impossible to adjust the stitch length or zigzag width for a particular stitch. Several will be present with the dimensions already indicated. With an increase in cost, there will be an opportunity for adjustment.
3. Shuttle device. Inexpensive cars have a swinging shuttle (vertical), like the old Chaika cars. More expensive models have a horizontal shuttle. Their main difference is the method of filling. To refuel the vertical hook, it is necessary to remove the hose platform, open the shuttle, and remove the bobbin case with the bobbin. Everything is simpler with the horizontal one – just open the bobbin cover and take out the bobbin. Also, at the horizontal shuttle, you can visually see when the lower thread ends, because the bobbin holder cover is transparent.
4. Automatic needle threader. This is a device that helps thread the eye of the needle. It is absent in budget models.
5. Adjusting the presser foot pressure on the fabric. This adjuster allows you to increase or decrease presser foot pressure depending on the fabric being sewn. The household machine can work with all kinds of materials. But in order to obtain better stitches on a particular material, it is always necessary to follow the sewing technology, that is, select a thread, needle, and pressure that are appropriate in thickness for the fabric. In budget cars, there will be no pressure change in the regulator; in more expensive ones, it is already present.
6. Speed controller on the machine body. Mostly present in electronic, but some electromechanical models. The sewing speed of the machines is regulated by pressing the pedal: the stronger the pressure, the higher the speed. If the regulator on the body is set to the minimum position, then no matter how hard you press on the pedal, the speed will not change. If you set it to the maximum, then the principle of increasing the speed by pressing the pedal is preserved.
7. Sewing button without foot switch “Start/Stop”, needle position button at the highest position, thread trimming button, spot bartacking – all these functions can only be found in electronic models of machines.
The list does not indicate about the reverse – a reverse stroke to secure the line and a removable sleeve platform. All household sewing machines are endowed with these functions at the moment.
In addition to the listed functions that should be considered when choosing a sewing machine, it is also worth paying attention to the series of machines from a particular manufacturer. All manufacturers have series for sewing only light and medium fabrics, as well as for sewing all types of fabrics. Machines for light and medium fabrics are lighter in weight and have less power. They are great for those who use the machine to repair clothes, i.e. hem curtains, jeans, bed linens. For the same needlewomen who completely sheathe the whole family, this option will not work. They should already pay attention to a more professional series for all types of fabrics.
Very often we are asked a question about the internal filling of the sewing machine. Most want less plastic inside and more metal parts. Let’s just say: when choosing, pay attention to the weight of the machine and the appearance of consumable parts – the needle plate and foot holder. If you get a heavy machine with a metal needle plate instead of a plastic one and metal presser foot holders, trust me, it won’t let you down.
And you need to take care of the car on time. Nothing complicated is required, it is enough to lubricate the running units according to the instructions, as well as clean the shuttle mechanism from dust and collected thread residues with a brush.
