Bengay ointment mainly relieves pain due to the content of two active substances – methyl salicylate and menthol, which additionally soothes inflammation. There is an aluminum tube in the medicine pack. It contains 50 g of the preparation.

In addition to the active substances – methyl salicylate and menthol – the composition of the Bengay analgesic ointment includes auxiliary substances:
- Stearic acid,
- Glycerol monostearate,
- Anhydrous lanolin,
- Polysorbate 85,
- tristearynian sorbitolu,
- Trietyloamina,
- Purified Water.
Bengay – when to use pain ointment?
The main indications for the use of Bengay analgesic ointment are pain and stiffness in muscles and joints caused by overstrain, mechanical injuries or inflammation. The ointment can also be used for pains in the lumbosacral spine.

Bengay Pain Relief Ointment should be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor or the information provided on the medicine leaflet. The preparation is applied topically to the skin and then gently spread.
The ointment can only be applied to the affected area.
Adults and children over 12 years of age may apply the preparation 3-4 times a day for a period of seven days. If after this time the pain is still severe, you should see a doctor who will determine the cause of the discomfort.
Bengay – Recommended Precautions
Bengay analgesic ointment should not be used under an occlusive dressing or a warming compress. In case of excessive skin irritation, discontinue use immediately. You should also remember to avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.
In addition, it is worth noting that Bengay ointment contains lanolin, which can cause local skin reactions. For this reason, it is worth making an allergy test before the first use of the preparation. The use of Bengay analgesic ointment has no influence on driving or using machines.
Bengay – contraindications to use
The main contraindication to the use of Bengay analgesic ointment is hypersensitivity to any of the active or excipients of the drug. Moreover, the preparation cannot be applied to damaged skin or a wound. The ointment should not be applied to the skin of children under the age of six.
Bengay – can it be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Due to the lack of sufficient studies confirming the safety of menthol and methyl salicylate in pregnant and lactating women, the use of the ointment is not recommended. It can only be used under medical supervision.
Bengay – drug interactions
Bengay Pain Relief Ointment should not be used simultaneously with two substances:
- Acetylsalicylic acid – due to the occurrence of toxic effects of salicylate,
- Anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin) – due to the possibility of heavy bleeding.

The most common side effects of using Bengay Pain Ointment include:
- Immune system disorders (angioedema),
- Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders (dyspnoea),
- General disorders (blisters, burning sensation, erythema, pain, paraesthesia, pruritus).

Bengay Pain Relief Ointment is best stored in a room with a maximum of 25 degrees C. Choose a place that is invisible and inaccessible to children. After the expiry date, the ointment should not be used. It is best to ask the pharmacist where to throw away the packaging.
