Bellergot is a drug with hypnotic, sedative, anticonvulsant and anti-migraine effects. It is widely used, among others in family medicine, gynecology and neurology. It is especially recommended for relieving the effects of menopause, dysmenorrhea and migraine-induced headaches. Due to the content of phenobarbital, a substance with a psychotropic effect, the drug cannot be purchased without a valid prescription.

Bellergot – action, indications and dosage

The combination of three active substances – phenobarbital, ergotamine tartrate and tropane alkaloids – makes Bellergot an effective drug for persistent symptoms accompanying the period of menopause, which is confirmed by numerous opinions of patients. In addition, it is indicated in the treatment of migraine-induced headaches and painful menstruation. Phenobarbital has a hypnotic and sedative effect. Ergotamine tartrate increases the tension in the brain’s blood vessels, thereby relieving migraine headaches. Tropane alkaloids relax smooth muscles and work, among others antiemetic and antiperspirant.

Dosage

Before using Bellergot, please read the package leaflet carefully. Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, 3 tablets are used in the treatment of migraines at a time. This dose can be taken again after at least one hour. Do not take more than 12 tablets during the day. To treat menopausal symptoms, take 1-2 tablets two or three times a day. Taking more than 32 tablets in a week is not recommended.

Bellergot – contraindications, side effects and interactions with other drugs

The drug should not be taken if the patient is allergic to any of its ingredients. It is not recommended for breastfeeding and pregnant women due to the possibility of premature birth and miscarriage, as well as causing fetal malformations. In addition, the preparation should not be used by people suffering from Parkinson’s disease, respiratory failure, atherosclerosis, myxedema, ischemic heart disease, sepsis, diabetes, gastrointestinal obstruction and arterial hypertension. Bellergot may have a negative effect on people who are addicted to alcohol and cigarettes.

Like any other preparation, Bellergot may cause a number of side effects. They include, among others. gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, thirst), nervous system (drowsiness), visual system (increased pressure in the eye, photophobia) allergic reactions (rash, swelling, very rarely exfoliative dermatitis), dry mucous membranes increased body temperature. It is rarely seen finger numbness, abnormal heart rhythm, decreased urine output and more. In the event of side effects, consult a doctor immediately.

Bellergot should not be taken with, for example, antihistamines, antifungal drugs, sleeping pills, neuroleptics, morphine derivatives, St. John’s wort preparations, anticoagulants and much more.
