Begonia: propagation by cuttings, leaf

Reproduction of begonias may be needed in different cases. Perhaps you want to sell begonias. Or maybe you have a flower, and you want to give someone the same. Or perhaps you saw a friend’s begonia and wanted the same for yourself. In this case, the question arises of how to propagate a flower.

There are 4 ways to propagate begonias: seeds, leaves, cuttings and tubers. Two of them are especially popular – leaves and cuttings.

Seed propagation of begonias is the most unreliable and inconvenient way

Seed propagation is unreliable. Many people find this inconvenient. Also, experienced florists note that propagation by cuttings and leaves is the simplest and most convenient ways.

Propagation of begonias by cuttings

When grafting, pay attention to the following features:

  1. Use only healthy growths that are at least 8 centimeters long.
  2. Make sure that there are at least two kidneys on the process.
  3. If there are a lot of extra leaves on the sprout, remove them. This way they will not draw energy from the new plant.
  4. After that, leave the new sections to dry.
  5. You can root the seedling in water: pour warm water into a transparent glass and place the cut in it. After that, wait until the roots of the plant are a couple of centimeters long and transplant it into a separate pot.
  6. You can also plant directly into the ground: for this, prepare a mixture of peat, sand and leafy soil. Before planting, dip the sprout in water, and place drainage in the pot and sprinkle soil on it. Then place the sprout in the soil. Cover the pot with a jar to create a greenhouse effect. As soon as new leaves appear, remove the jar.
  7. For both methods, keep the temperature at about 20 degrees.
  8. After these steps, follow your normal grooming guidelines.

As you can see, this method is quite easy. The most important thing is to follow all the rules, and then you will get a healthy new flower.

Leaf propagation is even easier:

  1. Cut off the begonia leaf carefully.
  2. You can cut it into several pieces, but there should be a vein in each piece. Or just take a whole sheet.
  3. Prepare the soil: peat, sand and leafy soil.
  4. Place the leaf in the soil and cover the pot with a jar or plastic cup to create a greenhouse effect.
  5. Spray the leaf to maintain moisture levels.
  6. Once roots appear, transplant the plant into a separate pot.

This method is even easier than the previous one, so the breeding process does not require much experience or much time from you. Leaf propagation takes about 3 months.

Now you know that you can get a new flower without much hassle, even without a lot of experience. If you do this correctly, you will end up with a healthy begonia that blooms annually and attracts attention.
