Elatior begonia is a perennial flowering plant. There are about 900 species and two thousand hybrids of begonias. They differ in color of flowers, size and shape of leaves. In height “Elatior” can grow up to 40 centimeters. Its leaves grow up to 8 centimeters, and the size of the flowers is 4–5 centimeters. The flowering period is autumn and winter. Caring for her is simple, but has its own characteristics.
If you have just purchased a plant, then let it adapt to new conditions. The first days it may be wilted, but after a while it will return to normal. If you have just planted begonia seedlings, then caring for them is different from caring for an adult begonia plant “Elatior”.
Begonia “Elatior” does not like direct sunlight, so it is better not to place it in the south side of the apartment.
When caring for Elatior begonia at home, pay attention to the following rules:
- Choose breathable, lightweight soil.
- Provide drainage for the flower and monitor the moisture level of the ground. Excessive watering will lead to root rot.
- The best location for begonias is a location that has scattered sunlight but is not exposed to direct sunlight. If they fall on the plant, then burns will appear on the leaves.
- Water the begonias liberally. In summer, you can water 2 times a week. But make sure that the water does not stagnate in the soil.
- The optimum temperature in summer is 20 or 25 degrees, in winter – at least 15. Begonias are thermophilic flowers.
- Apply organic fertilizer, but don’t overdo it. Fertilizers should be applied during the flowering period. Only mineral complexes are suitable for begonias.
- Loosen the soil occasionally to get better oxygen in the soil.
If you follow these simple rules, then every year you will observe the beautiful flowering of begonias. If the plant becomes withered or wilted, try to find the cause as soon as possible. You may be watering him too much or he needs fertilizer.
Separately, you need to know about transplanting and pruning. It is advisable to carry out this procedure for all flowers in your apartment. The transplant is carried out in the following cases:
- If the root system has grown too much and the pot has become unsuitable for begonias.
- If you need to update the soil.
A transplant is usually carried out every 2 years, but it is better to monitor the condition of your flower, then you will not miss the moment when it needs a transplant. When transplanting, the plant is carefully removed from the old pot and transferred to a new one. If necessary, renew the soil.
Pruning is recommended in early spring. To do this, remove all old and dry leaves. If you cut them, they will not take up the energy of the flower during growth and flowering.
If you follow the simple rules of care, then begonia will not cause much trouble in caring for it. “Elatior” is a great birthday present for a girl thanks to its beautiful flowers. By deciding to place begonias on your windowsill, you will not regret it. She will always grab the attention of guests and your family.
