Although millet is considered a harmless phenomenon, we are unlikely to want to observe it on our own skin. This article is just about how to deal with it and what to do to reduce the likelihood of these “seeds”.

What is prosyanka on the face

Millet is a dense formation on the skin, resembling cereals or millet in shape and color, hence the name.

Prosyanka is also called whiteheads, and is also confused with acne. However, she has a different nature. Unlike comedones, millet, firstly, is not an inflammatory element, and secondly, it does not have an exit channel – which is why it cannot be taken and squeezed out like a pimple.

Millet is harmless, but looks unattractive. So the desire to get rid of white (sometimes multiple) small tubercles is quite justified and understandable.

What does a millet look like

Millet resembles round grains or balls formed under the skin and protruding above its surface. These formations, about 1-2 mm in diameter, are visible to the naked eye and feel like a bulge if you run your fingertips over the skin.

In the classification of milia, it is customary to distinguish between:

  1. primary, appear due to a genetic predisposition, both in newborns and in adults.

  2. secondary, occur after inflammation, cosmetic procedures (polishing, median and laser peels, etc.) in the process of skin restoration.

Millet is often localized in the area around the eyes.

Where does millet appear most often?

Places of localization of millet:

  • cheeks;

  • eyelids;

  • forehead;

  • the area around the lips;

  • cheekbones.

Important! Molluscum contagiosum is a viral disease that looks very similar to millet.

By answering the questions of our test, you will find out which cosmetic procedure you need.

Causes of the appearance of millet on the skin

Surprisingly, the exact etiology of millet is still unknown to science. American pediatricians believe that the occurrence of milia in newborns is associated with the immaturity of the skin structures and they do not pose any danger.

As for adults, millet is primarily characteristic of oily skin, which is different:

  1. high activity of the sebaceous glands (a lot of sebum is produced);

  2. hyperkeratosis – delayed exfoliation of horny cells.

A completely logical question arises, why do some owners of oily skin have black dots and closed comedones, while others have millet? And there is no exact answer to it.

In addition to genetic predisposition and any external causes that cause increased activity of the sebaceous glands, secondary factors in the formation of milia include:

  • high-carbohydrate nutrition, i.e., an abundance in the diet of foods rich in simple carbohydrates;

  • lack of proper care, in particular insufficient exfoliation of the skin or the use of comedogenic products;

  • excessive insolation, aggravating hyperkeratosis – thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis.

Can the millet pass by itself

If milia have already appeared on the face, then they will not go away on their own – the formations may become less pronounced as a result of peeling and exfoliating activities. But this does not mean at all that the millet will not appear again. It all depends on the hormonal status, as well as nutrition and care.

In both children and adults, the formation of milia has hormonal causes. In newborns, milia pass on their own and without a trace. Adults will have to consult a specialist to get rid of millet.

Prevention of the appearance of millet

With a tendency to form millet (however, as well as comedones), two factors should be taken into account that you yourself can influence: lifestyle and skin care.

Competent skin care

Improperly selected care can exacerbate the situation. It is useful to read articles on our website dedicated to skin care, including around the eyes.

When choosing skin care with a tendency to prosyanka, pay attention to:

  • skin cleansing products with exfoliating and mattifying action;

  • peelings for home use (not homemade!);

  • light non-comedogenic creams.

You can’t get rid of millet with the help of cosmetics, but we have made a selection of products that will provide competent care for oily skin and, possibly, help to avoid this problem.

Proper nutrition for oily skin is considered to be a diet that limits high-carbohydrate foods: sugar, wheat, white rice and products from them. The basis of the menu should be green vegetables, natural fats (both animal and vegetable, not refined), proteins.

The use of sugar can provoke prosyanka.

How to remove prosyanka from a beautician

What to do if a millet appeared on the face? There are two options: either ignore it, or go to a dermatologist who knows exactly how to get rid of millet and will offer one of these options.

  1. Mechanical cleaning and removal of milia with a needle and special tools.

  2. Complex procedure: chemical (acid) peeling + mechanical cleaning.

  3. Acid peeling.

How to get rid of millet at home

From all that has been said, it is clear: it is impossible to get rid of the “stubborn” millet at home. Inept assault (attempts to remove the millet with a needle and other barbaric methods) will not only fail, but will certainly leave a red or even bluish mark, that is, another problem will be added to the existing problem. So we do not recommend doing it yourself.

As for do-it-yourself cosmetics, in this case it is hardly worth counting on its effectiveness, because the program for getting rid of millet includes combined methods: cosmetic procedures and at certain points treatment, home masks are not included in this list.

However, if you like to “cook” cosmetics, pay attention to recipes for oily skin aimed at cleansing it and exfoliating the stratum corneum:

  • clay masks;

  • fruit and berry masks (with lemon, with red and black currants);

  • scrubs.
