Beers preferred by the Spanish

Beers preferred by the Spanish

In the last decades, numerous new types of beers and brands have appeared, especially in the stage of the craft beer boom.

Thanks to this culture, it is very easy to find brands whose beers vary enormously in their preparation, flavor or ingredients, giving a different touch to each beer.

And all this has generated a range of possibilities for lovers of this fermented barley drink. But within this great variety,

Do you know which are the beers preferred by the Spanish? We present them to you, below:

1. Estrella Galicia

Despite not being the best-selling beer (in fact, it is ranked fourth in the country), it is the preferred by the Spanish of up to 10 different autonomous communities: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Valencia and the Balearic Islands.

It should be noted that the 2016 surveys placed San Miguel as the best-selling beer in the whole of northern Spain, so there is no doubt that Estrella Galicia has achieved significant growth in recent years.

2. Mahou

Secondly, we highlight the Mahou beer, being the most sold in the country, although unlike Estrella Galicia, leader in 10 communities, Mahou is only preferred by two autonomous communities; Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha.

3. Warehouse

Ambar is another of the beers preferred by the Spanish, being the most sold in Aragon. We point out that, what is known as Ambar beer, belongs to La Zaragozana, a company founded in 1900 and also known for being the first to launch a non-alcoholic beer: Ambar Sin.

4. Estrella Damm

Estrella Damm, founded in 1876, is the preferred beer brand in Catalonia, being also originally from Barcelona and succeeding as a 100% Mediterranean beer.

5. Levante Star

In fifth place, we highlight the Estrella de Levante beer, which, Despite not being well known nationally, it is in Murcia, a region where this is the best-selling cherry. An interesting fact is the incorporation of rice, typical of this community, in beer.

6. Cruzcampo

This is the beer preferred by the Andalusians, and it is not surprising, since it is said that Cruzcampo beer has a “special flavor” in Andalusia, since this can vary depending on the place where it is manufactured, mainly as a result of the water used.

7. Dorada

We finished the ranking of beers preferred by the Spanish with Dorada, the preferred one in the Canary Islands, despite not being one of the best known in the rest of Spain.

Now, why do Spaniards choose one brand or another?

If you’ve ever asked yourself this question, let us answer it. The majority of Spanish consumers choose one or another beer based on a criterion of “regional pride” as indicated by Datacentric. However, this is not unique to the beer market.

In general, we could say that the two most important criteria for Spaniards are territorial identity and tradition, although of course this may vary from one sector to another.

In such a way that, for example, these two criteria are not the most relevant if we analyze the category of supermarkets, where Mercadona is the absolute leader.
