Beer Velkopopovitsky Kozel: history, types and how to drink

Popular in Russia, foamy alcohol with an unusual name has been produced for more than 200 years in the Czech region of Bohemia, famous for its glassware and developed culture.

The famous beer received the first part of the name from the large village of Velke Popovice, where it is produced. The second went to the drink as a tribute to traditions: the goat has long been considered a local symbol of a strong barley product. Velkopopovice beer is the most famous Czech beer.

History of the Velkopopovitsky Kozel brand

Fragrant spirits have been brewed by the inhabitants of Velké Popovice since the 1870th century. The plant for the production of the drink was founded here by Baron Franz Ringhoffer in XNUMX.

The first batch of beer under a well-known brand was released 4 years later – in 1874.

According to legend, a wandering French artist took part in the creation of the logo. Impressed by the local hospitality, the talented wanderer presented the villagers with a drawing depicting a goat. Subsequently, he became a symbol of the brewery.

The very same brand “Velkopopovický Kozel” was registered only in 1922. At the same time, the legendary goat appeared on the labels of the bottles.

Representatives of the company did not stop there and decided to introduce a living representative of artiodactyls at the brewery. A wayward goat named Olda settled at the enterprise in 1938 and became its talisman. After some time, he was replaced by the next representative of the horned family. Since then, many generations of kids have lived at the brewery, and sculptures of animals have adorned the territory of the brewery.

The most famous incarnation of the first horned inhabitant of Olda was a huge wooden statue, near which local foam fans like to gather.

In the 60s, with the growing popularity of the drink, the company launched the production of tank beer (beer that is transported and stored in tanks / tanks right in the restaurant).

Much attention is paid by Czech manufacturers to the development of souvenirs. The most popular among tourists is the famous “horned pint”, created with the participation of the artist Jan Capek.
