Beer Obolon: history, overview of types + interesting facts

History of beer Obolon

Obolon – Ukrainian beer, which was released thanks to the 1980 Olympics, which took place in Moscow. The government wanted to prove that the same beer was brewed in the Soviet Union as elsewhere in the world. The slogan of his advertising campaign: “Obolon is the beer of your Fatherland.”

1980 On the occasion of the XXII Olympic Games, a brewery No. 3 was opened in Kiev, which meets European production standards.

Through the efforts of the Soviet leadership, highly qualified brewers from the Czech Republic were called in. The Kiev region of Obolon was determined for construction not by chance: it had an artesian source with soft water and a low content of minerals, devoid of any impurities, which undoubtedly affected the taste.

1986 On the factory base, under the general name “Obolon”, a brewery in Fastov and a couple of Kiev ones were merged.

1989 Alexander Slobodyan became the CEO of the company. He leads her to this day. Began sales of products abroad, namely beer “Zhiguli Beer” to the UK market.

1998 The company was the first in the industry to receive an international certificate for the quality management system ISO 9001 version 1994. This meant that all production processes were at a high level, and the quality of the products was no worse than the world’s.

In the same year, the company opened an agricultural direction, namely, it created the research and production association Niva Obolon. In order to supply quality materials, specialists were involved in the selection, trials and multiplication on an industrial scale of seeds of promising barley varieties.

2004 The company installed a new brewing procedure, which was updated after another three years, as well as the largest among European beer bottling lines. Its capacity was 110 bottles per hour. The release of the youth brand “hike premium” in limited quantities was launched.

2008 In April, the updated Obolon Unfiltered was presented. You can find it only in the Kiev company store, on the shelves of which it gets straight from the cylindrical-conical tanks. The drink is of natural origin and contains many yeast cells – a source of amino acids and vitamins.

The beer is unpasteurized and has a short shelf life. A self-adhesive label appeared on its packaging, where the expiration date is indicated: only three days. The label protects against unauthorized sales.

2011 The company began to cooperate with the American Molson Coors Brewing Company, which owns more than one popular brand. The first deliveries of products to China took place.
