Franciscan (n.) is a brand of German Weissbier produced in Munich, Germany by the Bavarian brewery Spaten-Franziskaner Broy.
Franciscan story
The history of Franziskaner begins back in 1363, when it was first mentioned that the brewer Seidel Waterstetter is the owner of a “brewery next to the Franciscans”, which is located on one of the Munich streets of Residenzstrasse. The brewery got its name Franziskaner from the nearby monastery.
In 1841, Augustin Diegelmeier, the adopted son of the owner of the Spaten brewery, Gabriel Sedlmeier Sr., buys the company. He moves the production of the drink to Lilienberg and modernizes the technology for its production. Since 1861, the factory has a new owner – Josef Siedelmeier, son of Gabriel Sedlmeier Sr. and owner of the Leist brewery.
In 1909, Gabriel Siedlmayr III, son of Josef Siedelmayer, takes over the Franziskaner-Leist plant into the family joint-stock company Joseph Sedlmayr Zum Franziskanerkeller AG. This is how the Siedelmeier family business was created – a combined company that produces beer. In 1935, with the help of the painter Ludwig Hohlwein, the brand receives its trademark: a Franciscan friar holding a mug of beer in his hand.
