Allergy can make you feel sleepy and tired. On the other hand, common symptoms such as itchy eyes, sneezing and runny nose make it difficult to fall asleep. Therefore, see what you should do to minimize the amount of allergens in the bedroom.
Popular allergens
To get rid of allergens, you need to understand exactly what you are dealing with. There are five most common types of allergens:
- Mold spores – accumulate in damp and dark places, including wardrobes, window moldings. They cause a number of unpleasant symptoms.
- Dust mites are common in bedding, mascots, curtains, carpets and upholstery.
- Pet hair – proteins from your pet’s fur, skin, urine, and saliva can stick to the surface of bedding, carpet, or any other place where it likes to rest. This allergen, colloquially known as animal dander, tends to be left in the air. It can float for hours.
- Cockroaches – There are many ways to get rid of them from your bedroom. The main thing, however, is not to eat in bed and clean up the crumbs quickly.
- Pollen – annoys especially in spring and autumn.
Anti-mite barrier covers
Mattresses, pillows and duvets create a friendly environment for mites. Interestingly, a typical mattress can accommodate up to 10 million of these pests. They feed on dead skin cells. They live in a dark, humid environment.
Get them out of your home by covering the mattress, duvet and pillows anti-mite covers. Also, pay attention to sheets with pores of 10 microns or less.
Linen made of breathable materials
By using breathable materials, you can stop the growth of mold. It is a fluffy mushroom that grows in dark and damp corners of the bed. Organic bedding materials absorb moisture from the body more effectively than other fabrics. Thanks to this, they can effectively protect against mold.
Most of the organic fibers come from plants that are grown without the use of pesticides or chemicals. Therefore, they do not irritate the sensitive skin of allergy sufferers. Choose anti-allergic fabrics such as linen or cotton.

Blankets and bedding – a source of allergens
If you want to keep allergens away, you need to keep your bedding clean, fresh. To eliminate mold and dust mites, wash blankets and sheets at a minimum temperature of 60 degrees Celsius. Pour into sheets that cannot be washed in hot water antiallergic detergent.
Bedroom for allergy sufferer – what else to remember?
- Bedroom floors. If you have allergies, try to avoid rugs in your bedroom. High-pile carpeting can easily trap allergens. If you are renting an apartment or you do not want to use hardwood or linoleum flooring, consider a low pile carpet. Also pay attention to a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
- Curtains, blinds and windows. Invest in curtains and blinds that are washable. Cotton and synthetic fabrics will work well. Remember to ventilate your bedroom every day. Regularly clean the windows.
- Air filter. It cleans the air of irritating pollutants, particles and vapors that lead to symptoms of allergies and many other diseases. It improves the overall air quality in the room. We strongly recommend one that uses a HEPA filter. Captures at least 99,97% of solid particles of 0,3 microns or greater.
- Adequate humidity level. It is important to maintain the humidity level in your home. Too dry air irritates the eyes, nose and throat. It also aggravates the symptoms of allergies. On the other hand, too humid air can lead to mold growth. A safe and healthy level of humidity is 30-50%.
A humidifier or air dryer will come in handy here. Or you can go a step further and buy an air purifier with the added humidifying or dehumidifying function.
