Beans got bugs, what should I do?
If you store beans in a bag on a shelf in your kitchen cabinet, bugs can get in there. We explain what kind of bugs they are and what to do to get them out. We will also answer the question of whether it is possible to eat contaminated beans.
Beans stored at home can be spoiled by small insects. If bugs are in the beans, then they actively eat the grains, making them unsuitable for food. They can move into a container with beans from stored nearby products (for example, flour) or enter the house from the garden bed – along with the harvested beans.
To protect the product from bugs, you need to take care of the harvest in advance, treating the plantings with pest control in a timely manner. Before laying for a very long (years) storage of beans, beans must be dried in an oven heated to 80-90 degrees for 5 minutes. It is also recommended to buy beans of proven brands or, if they are bulk beans, check at least the certificates of proper quality.
Beans should be stored “for future use” in the cold, at a temperature of 5-10 degrees – such conditions are unfavorable for insects. You can store it in the refrigerator. It is useful to put unpeeled cloves of garlic, dill seeds with grains, which repel pests. And remember that beans must be soaked during cooking!
