One of the most visited rooms in a private house or apartment is a bathroom. Therefore, it should be functional, comfortable and beautiful. Such a list of requirements makes decorating a bathroom a daunting task. Considering that its area is rarely large, you have to solve a puzzle: how to squeeze everything you need, and even so that it looks harmonious. However, many modern materials and plumbing allow you to successfully cope with the task.
What should be in the bathroom
The widest selection of plumbing and furniture does not allow you to set a rigid list of what must be in the bathroom: there are too many options and variations. You can only designate the necessary functionality, and what it will be provided with is your choice.
So, in order. Be sure to have a place where you can wash. It can be a shower, bathtub, jacuzzi. The second required element is the sink. It can be wall-mounted, cantilever (pipes are hidden in the wall), corner. There is also a mirror and shelves. They can be combined in one piece of furniture or be a set of separate items. Hooks or hangers for towels, shelves and shelves for placing cosmetic, hygiene products are needed.
Everything is complicated by the fact that in an ordinary standard apartment there is often simply nowhere to put a washing machine, and they are forced to put it in the bathroom. Another difficulty is a combined bathroom, when the bathroom is also a toilet at the same time and it is necessary to look for a place for additional plumbing.
From all this set, as well as finishing materials and lighting, the interior of the bathroom is formed. The main difficulty is to make sure that everything “fits in” and looks harmonious at the same time.

Planning and design
At the very beginning, even before the first trips to the store, you will have to do some drawing. This is necessary so that later it does not turn out that carefully selected plumbing simply does not get into the place allotted for it or requires a thorough alteration of communications. Therefore, we arm ourselves with a plan of the bathroom on a scale, mark the doors on it, the window, if any, indicate the points of connection of the water supply, sewerage, and the exits of the ventilation shafts.
On this plan, you need to place all the items that you plan to install. To do this, cut them out of cardboard in the same scale as the room and simply move them, trying to arrange everything. As a result, you should get approximately the same plan as in the photo.
If you are at odds with office equipment, you can use one of the design programs (if you find a demo version). Having such a plan, you can find out what sizes of furniture, bathroom, sink you need.
Color Solutions
The choice of bathroom color is the main moment of design development. In many ways, it is dictated by the size of the room. The rules remain the same:
- light colors visually expand the space, dark colors narrow;
- borders around the entire perimeter and a clear border between light and dark shades visually make the room lower;
- if you make the walls and ceiling of similar shades (light) without clear boundaries, the room will be perceived as higher and more spacious.
Light does not mean plain. These flowers are painted in black, but they do not reduce the space and do not weigh down the interior.
All this does not mean at all that the design of a small bathroom should be monochromatic and monochrome. Not at all. Color accents are possible and even necessary, but light colors should prevail in the interior. This is not bad at all: the design of a bathroom in dark colors, even with a large area and good lighting, is almost always gloomy. In addition, such a design can get bored in a few weeks: saturated shades put too much pressure on the psyche.
In the design in the photo above, chocolate color is used. With an abundance of light, a white ceiling and light tiles on the floor, it looks gorgeous. Also saves the situation is a large mirror almost the entire wall: it visually enlarges the space. Dilutes dark colors and white textiles. But if it is not there, it will undoubtedly be dark and gloomy.

bathroom lighting
When choosing fixtures, pay attention to the protection class: they must be designed for use in wet areas. This means that the protection class must be at least IP44. Only in this case, the bathroom lighting will work for a long time and without problems.
When developing a luminaire layout, several lighting zones are most often made: a common ceiling and several zones brought to individual switches. A few lamps near the mirror are a must, but you can also add lighting to the bathroom or shower.
There is a very interesting design move – to make built-in shelves and highlight them. Since the walls are most often tiled, the effect is unexpectedly interesting. Looks good lighting from the bottom of the bathroom or sink. They are partially covered with a screen, and a backlight is installed behind it, it can also be colored (from LEDs or LED strips).
The lighting design of the bathroom is one of the key points of design: well-chosen lamps unite everything into a single whole. One way is to install fixtures with a narrow beam of light, they create glare on the tiles, which are reflected by the mirror and faience.
Modern small bathroom design
Decorating a small space is always more of a challenge. The functionality of the bathroom does not change depending on the size and you have to come up with something to make it beautiful and comfortable.
One way is to use glass. For example, glass sinks. If you install a bathroom, a toilet bowl and a faience sink in a small-sized room next to it, not only will everything stand back to back, and everything will look like it is piled up in one heap. Massive, albeit light in color, plumbing looks heavy. Installing a glass sink solves the problem.
You can also use glass partitions. Putting a wall in a small bathroom is generally unrealistic, but somehow it is necessary to separate the zone. Glass solves the problem: it takes up a minimum of space and does not reduce it visually.
Another way is to install console plumbing. All its “stuffing” is hidden in the wall. All that remains is the sink or toilet, which. Visually, they don’t look that big. There are also sinks that are installed above the washing machine – in small apartments, finding a place to install large appliances is a problem.
