Barley in the eye (what to do)
When a swelling appears on the edge of the eyelid and an abscess appears, that is, barley appears on the eye, the question is “what to do?” – becomes the most relevant. Barley in the eye: what to do?
“I have barley in the eye, what to do?! ” – if you are approached with such a question, or it arises from ourselves, you must, firstly, clearly remember that in no case should you squeeze out pus! This is no ordinary pimple. By squeezing out barley, you risk spreading pathogenic bacteria to other membranes of the eye, and the infection can enter the brain with the bloodstream. Frankly speaking, it is undesirable to treat barley on your own, if possible, be sure to go to an ophthalmologist.
The doctor will tell you exactly what to do when there is barley on the eye, and, most likely, will prescribe drops and ointments. So, to get rid of barley on the eye, instill a drop of albucid into the eye five times a day; smear the affected area with tetracycline or levomycytin ointment. If barley is frequent, you need enhanced treatment, such as UHF or quartzing, you may also be advised to drink a course of antibiotics and vitamins.
Relatives may advise heating the barley. It really helps to get rid of the barley, but it’s important to remember that if you start heating the barley before the abscess opens, you risk only increasing the inflammation. It is better to start warming up when the barley has already opened, that is, a purulent discharge has appeared. At home, the best heating pad for barley will be a boiled egg – wrap it with a soft cloth so as not to burn the skin of the eyelid and attach it to the sore spot.
Why does barley appear on the eye?
Getting rid of the barley is half the battle, it is much more important to make sure that it does not appear again. What is barley and how to prevent its appearance? The immediate culprit for the appearance of barley on the eye is a bacterial infection. Barley is an acute staphylococcal infection of the hair follicle and adjacent glands. Most often, the infection develops as a result of exposure to Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, in most cases, barley affects children who have a very weak immune system.
Barley appears as a result of infection of the hair follicle or sebaceous gland. The reason for the appearance may be non-observance of the rules of personal hygiene (it is enough to wipe the eye with dirty hands or a towel). Also, barley can occur in cases where there is any disease of the gastrointestinal tract, worms or diabetes mellitus. Immunity disorders, metabolic disorders contribute to the appearance of barley.
