Bags under the eyes – what is it?
The area around the eyes has a physiological predisposition to swelling: fluid accumulates faster in the loose subcutaneous fat tissue and is manifested by swelling under the thin skin of the eyelids.
Bags or puffiness under the eyes – stagnation of fluid and protrusion of adipose tissue in the periorbital region. Bags mainly appear in the morning due to the accumulation of excess water in the human body and are considered a common problem for people of all ages. But there are other reasons for their occurrence.
Why bags appear under the eyes: reasons
There are various reasons for the appearance of bags under the eyes. In order to correctly determine an effective way to correct a problem, it is important to identify the prerequisites for its occurrence.
Bags appear at any age, both in girls, women, and men. In women, due to physiological characteristics, swelling of the eyelids is more common.
The main causes of bags under the eyes:
- Genetics – hereditary predisposition to the formation of bags under the eyes.
- Improper care: excessive hydration or, conversely, dehydration of tissues can cause swelling of the eyelids.
- Allergies: The mucous membrane of the eyes is very sensitive and may react with swelling to the aggressive composition of the eye cream, contact lenses or other irritants.
- Some diseases: violation of the salt balance of the body, cardiovascular diseases, osteochondrosis, viral infections can also cause bags under the eyes.
- Stagnation of lymph: due to constant muscle tension during squinting of the eyes, the circulation of blood and lymph in the periorbital zone is disturbed.
- Unbalanced diet: excessive consumption of salty, fatty, sweet, fried foods contributes to the stagnation of fluid in the soft tissues. Drinking alcohol before bedtime also provokes bags.
- Insufficient drinking regime: with a lack of fluid, the system of its excretion by the body is disturbed – due to dehydration of the body, a natural accumulation of moisture occurs in the tissues.
- The low content of collagen and elastin in the thin skin of the eyelids deprives it of elasticity, due to swelling, the tissues undergo ptosis and form bags.
- The lack of proper sleep first of all gives itself out as bags and bruises under the eyes. Let your eyes rest from gadgets: muscle hypertonicity contributes to impaired blood supply to tissues.
- After some cosmetic procedures, there are swelling on the face: Botox injections, biorevitalization, mesotherapy, laser resurfacing, tattooing or eyelash extensions. Usually such a reaction disappears in 1-5 days, if the swelling persists longer, consult a doctor.
- Age-related changes and gravitational ptosis of tissues also cause deformation of the face oval and sagging skin in the eyelids and neck.
Types of bags and swelling under the eyes
Specialists distinguish two types of swelling under the eyes: hernial (painting) and edematous bags. The first are due to the peculiarities of the physiological structure, appear from birth and are permanent. The second is a consequence of stagnation of fluid in the tissues. We will analyze the causes and methods for correcting bags under the eyes.
“If the cause of static swelling is in the individual characteristics of the body, then it will not be possible to get rid of the bags forever, but their manifestation can be minimized thanks to corrective care for the skin around the eyes with a tonic effect.” – Alexander Prokofiev – dermatovenereologist, expert of the La Roche-Posay brand.
Dark bags: blue, black, brown
Classic dark bags under the eyes are the result of exhaustion of the body and a signal that you need a good rest. They occur against the background of prolonged work at the computer, during which the eyes are very strained. Brown bags may appear due to liver problems.
purple bags under the eyes
They also indicate exhaustion and a lack of certain vitamins and elements in the body. Change to a balanced diet or see your doctor to get you the necessary multivitamins and nutritional supplements based on test results.
Red bags under the eyes
Most often, they are signs of any infections, irritation of the mucous membrane and hypersensitive skin of the periorbital zone. Allergic and inflammatory reactions are accompanied by swelling of the eyelids, redness of the eyes, itching, and increased lacrimation.
Yellow bags under the eyes
Yellow bags can be a sign of disruption of some internal organs, frequent stress, nervous disorders. It also often occurs against the background of bad habits, such as smoking.
Interestingly: Yellow-green bags under the eyes often occur for the same reasons as yellow ones, but they have another feature: sometimes they can be the result of long-term wearing of glasses. Give up the accessory for a while and follow the dynamics of skin color.
White bags under the eyes
The result of a lack of blood supply due to anemia or vitiligo is hyperpigmentation of skin areas.
Watery bags under the eyes
Watery swelling under the eyes is provoked by the accumulation of excess fluid in the interstitial space. Swelling on the face is a common occurrence against the background of kidney disease. To get rid of swelling, it is necessary to identify the cause of their occurrence.
Eye bag on one side
A one-sided bag under the eye can be triggered by allergies, inflammation of the ENT organs, bacteria, insect bites, trauma to the forehead or bridge of the nose. But more often, swelling under one eye occurs due to the classic stagnation of moisture in the tissues.
How to correct puffiness and dark bags under the eyes
If bags under the eyes are caused by a genetic predisposition, relapses of certain diseases or allergic reactions, then it will not work to get rid of them with the help of cosmetics.
Corrective care will help reduce swelling and dark bags, the effects of reduced skin tone and firmness in the periorbital area due to, for example, dehydration. Also, cosmetics will help lighten pigmentation under the eyes – the result of photoaging of the skin.
How to effectively reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes, Alexander Prokofiev, a dermatovenereologist, expert of the La Roche-Posay brand, tells:
- Conservative treatment Normalize sleep, switch to a healthy diet, lead an active lifestyle. In the morning, do lymphatic drainage self-massage of the face, practice contrast washing.
- Operative intervention In the absence of results from conservative, cosmetic and dermatological treatment of bags under the eyes, there is a radical way to tighten the skin of the lower or upper eyelids – blepharoplasty – a method of surgical skin rejuvenation.
- Cosmetic procedures It is possible to correct puffiness under the eyes and paint bags with the help of aesthetic procedures, for example, microcurrents, non-injection mesotherapy, lymphatic drainage procedures. It is better to refrain from injections of hyaluronic acid – in large quantities, the hydrofixator additionally absorbs and retains moisture in the skin cells.
- Cosmetic corrective care Highly effective eye care formulas can effectively reduce the appearance of bags and dark circles under the eyes at home. In daily care formulas, look for tonic ingredients such as caffeine, as well as ingredients aimed at combating the signs of skin aging, such as hyaluronic acid, proxylan, antioxidants (vitamin E, C) and ingredients known to stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin to increase skin turgor in the area around the eyes.
