Listeriosis – what is this disease?
The GIS advises you not to consume “Luncheon meat” from a bad batch, and if you experience symptoms of the disease after eating the products covered by this message, contact your doctor.
Listeriosis is a disease that is particularly dangerous to people with immature or impaired cellular immunity. Therefore, the greatest danger concerns newborns, pregnant women, the elderly, patients after organ transplants, patients with neoplastic diseases, cirrhosis of the liver and people undergoing immunosuppressive treatment. Healthy people can also get sick.
However, it cannot be ruled out that previously healthy people may also suffer from the disease.
The most common form of infection in immunocompromised people is listeriosis, followed by meningitis and encephalitis. In some patients, listeriosis occurs in the form of inflammation of the brainstem or brain abscesses, and endocarditis caused by L. monocytogenes is also possible.
As we read on the GIS website, the symptoms of listeriosis are as follows:
- After an incubation period of about 3 weeks, pregnant women develop flu-like symptoms or symptoms resulting from inflammation of the urinary tract. The infection may result in fetal death and miscarriage, or congenital listeriosis in the newborn
- Most often, adults do not have any symptoms of infection
- In elderly and immunocompromised people, infection may lead to meningitis, inflammation of the brain and sepsis
