The use of analgesics is not recommended during pregnancy. Unfortunately, the closer the delivery is, the more the back pain increases – the child is constantly growing, increasing its weight, which naturally contributes to the worsening of pain. This does not signal anything dangerous, but it can be very annoying and definitely hinders everyday functioning. From the end of the second trimester, it is an ailment affecting almost every pregnant woman. How to relieve back pain during this time, without using standard remedies?

It is worth knowing ways that will make the pain less, less frequent or more bearable. There are many daily steps that must be followed to get rid of this ailment. Normally, back problems appear during the sixth month of pregnancy, although some women experience them earlier because they had back problems before conception. In combating such pain, regularity and consistency are important, because you need to follow certain rules in the activities that we do every day.

Correct sitting and sleeping position

Falling asleep with a pregnant belly is often not the easiest task – while lying down, strong pressure is exerted on the spine, which even causes insomnia. That is why it is so important to have a comfortable mattress and sleep in the right position when preparing for sleep during pregnancy. The mattress should not be too soft or too hard (preferably somewhere in between). It is good that it adapts to the spine, i.e. bends under various curvatures of the back, but at the same time supports it properly. When you lie down on your back, put a pillow under your lumbar region (you will level your back). The best sleeping position during pregnancy is to lie on your left side with a small pillow between your legs and under your belly.

The second activity that is very burdensome for the back is sitting. When you spend most of your time sitting or working, try to walk a little every hour (even around the room) and try to do some bends. When sitting, try not to cross your legs, and when sitting, always rest your back on the backrest and keep your feet on the floor.

What not to do to avoid pain?

  • Do not raise your hands high above your head, e.g. reaching for something from a high shelf, because this activity strains the back muscles. Better use a stable stool, a small ladder, etc.
  • Try not to lift heavy things by bending your back, but standing with your feet slightly apart and bending your knees. Then you will not strain your back muscles.
  • Go for walks, but do not wear high heels and other shoes that can “hurt” your spine. Put on flat, non-slip shoes.
  • Avoid prolonged standing and stillness.
