Baby: the golden rules for successful dietary diversification

Baby food in small amounts

For your little one, discovering the flavors of cooked fruits and vegetables (and always finely mixed) is a great sensory step! He not only discovers flavors other than those of mother’s milk – or infant milk, when you cannot or do not want to breastfeed – but also the textures of the milled plants. This is why, in the first days, baby will be offered only a few teaspoons of puree, then of compote. To make it easier for you in the kitchen, you can use ready-made small pots. They consist of strictly regulated recipes for baby’s nutritional well-being. And allow you to take the right amount for your meals!

Choose ready-made meals that meet baby’s needs

Do you like knowing exactly what’s on baby’s plate? For him, you want good, organic, taste, and that’s normal. When you prepare its purees and compotes, you select the fruits and vegetables with the utmost care and it is only natural to have the same requirements when choosing ready-to-eat dishes. To answer this, Babybio, a French SME pioneer in organic infant nutrition, has been developing a wide range of delicious organic products made in France for more than 25 years, without exception. Whether it is small jars, full dishes, cereals, cookies or dairy desserts, there is nothing to meet all expectations and desires. Because transparency and traceability are essential, the brand mentions the origin of the ingredients on its packaging and offers a most local supply mainly from our regions. Authentic and original recipes that are available in large and medium-sized stores, in organic stores and on the internet. To support parents and transmit the true taste for good things from an early age.

Between 6 and 8 months: establish a rhythm for the meals

As your apprentice gourmet refines his palate, he also creates his first habits and his eating balance. Very quickly, around 6 to 8 months, you will have to make sure to establish a regular rhythm, with 4 meals per day. These meals taken at regular times will gradually allow him to regulate his appetite and satiety. A solid base to avoid snacking when he is older. The establishment of a time frame also strengthens the security feeling of your child.

Milk is at least 3 years old!

In parallel with food diversification, know that milk remains a central food in the diet of your little one. Until 3 years old, he will need at least 500 ml of milk per day to cover his needs in calcium, iron and essential fatty acids.

The discovery of foods, one by one, for babies

Your child is in full discovery. He needs to identify each food at his own pace in order to “train” to appreciate and recognize them. This is why, at the very beginning of the diversification, offer purees and compotes with a unique flavor. We will start with the carrot, soft and subtly sweet, then the pumpkin or the green beans, but also the apple, the pear, the peach. Sure, these vegetables must always be well cooked and finely mixed. Indeed, your baby’s digestive system is not yet mature enough to withstand raw vegetables, and his chewing capacities are not sufficiently developed to allow him to consume pieces, even soft ones.

No salt or sugar for baby!

To help your baby properly register the taste of food, know that it is useless to salt or sweeten your dishes. Instead, turn to seasonal fruits and vegetables, rich in flavor and preferably organic. On the other hand, you can add a knob of butter or a drizzle of olive oil to its purees, for fatty acid contributions.

Do not force baby to eat his purees

If your child refuses a few spoonfuls of mash, do not insist on making him enjoy it throughout the meal. Switch to another food, which he may like more, and start over with the previous one as soon as he has returned to the pleasure of eating. Perhaps his refusal is linked to the model of his spoon? Metal can put babies off. Try with a plastic or silicone spoon with rounded ends. Very quickly, you can prepare mixed mash: potatoes-carrots-zucchini or pumpkin-parsnip, that will open their taste buds to new culinary horizons. Also know that if smooth purees are recommended for up to 8 months, at this stage, their consistency will have to evolve with mashed potatoes with a fork and the first melting pieces that your little one will be able to chew. This will further develop his pleasure of eating!
