Baby: how to sterilize bottles?

To be effective, the sterilization of baby bottles must be done under drastic hygienic conditions, difficult to set up at home. If you still want to sterilize baby’s bottles, here are the different possible methods.

Do you have to clean the bottle before sterilizing it?

Before embarking on sterilization, we first ensure that thoroughly clean the bottle, teat and retaining ring, brushing them with a suitable bottle brush and liquid soap. Then rinse everything thoroughly. Warning: If the bottle is rinsed improperly before sterilizing it, the scalding process can then cause the remaining soap particles to stick to the bottle.

Sterilization can be carried out hot by boiling. It is then done in a large pot filled with water, to be heated on the baking sheet. You can sterilize 6 bottles at a time in about 20 minutes.

There are also electric sterilizers. Some sterilize bottles with steam in just 10 minutes, and sometimes less. Convenient and fast!

How to proceed for cold sterilization with a tablet?

Cold sterilization is carried out using disinfectants. For it to be fully effective, it is recommended that you follow the time guidelines: 30 to 60 minutes of cold immersion, depending on the brand of the disinfectant. It can happen that this cold sterilization leaves on the bottles and teats a somewhat unpleasant odor in our opinion as adults. However, she does not seem to bother babies and does not affect the taste of milk in any way : if we rinse to remove it, we also remove the entire sterilization process!

Hot: sterilization in the microwave or with an electric sterilizer

In the plastic sterilizer provided for the microwave, sterilization is done thanks to the water Vapour. Add a little water, close with the lid and place in the microwave at maximum power. Very practical, this method also has the advantage of being fast. About 4 bottles are sterilized in 3 to 10 minutes, depending on the power of the microwave oven.

It is also possible to use an electric sterilizer. The important thing, if we want the sterilization to be impeccable, being to carry out the entire process: it is necessary to recover all the sterilized elements with a clamp that is itself sterilized, to reconstitute the bottle while it is still wet and put it in the fridge to prevent the development of germs. But beware, after 24 hours in the fridge, it is no longer sterile.

If this method is mandatory and perfectly performed in a medical environment, it can be complicated to perform at home. This is why we now recommend an impeccable cleaning rather than a poorly performed sterilization.

Is it necessary to sterilize the bottles?

We can not emphasize this enough : better a meticulous cleaning than a sterilization in a hurry. In general, according to ANSES (National Agency for Health, Food, Environment and Occupational Safety), there is no no need to sterilize bottles at home. Pierre Popowski, pediatrician-homeopath confirms: “ Baby does not live in a sterile environment, but in equilibrium with his environment. Sterilization is an establishment practice.
