No question of actually initiating your child to painting or sculpture … but to arouse in him the pleasure of discovery from his early years. Follow the guide !
The museum with baby is good for his creativity!
With a little humor and a few good “keys”, your little one can start to tame the culture. A play-based visit develops baby’s sensitivity, curiosity and creativity.
Dominique Kroll, educator of young children (EJE) and director of the nursery “Les Gribouilles”, in Courrières (62, Pas-de-Calais), explains
How do I choose the right museum for my child?
- Prefer museums that offer workshops or “special for children” activities. Coloring, plasticine, paint, glitter will allow your toddlers to tame the works after the visit. So many charming creations to take home!
- Favor colorful works and simple shapes. So look at the baby’s face of wonder in front of the colorful ladies of Nicky de Saint Phalle or the funny bull heads of Picasso…
- Avoid the successful exhibitions and don’t show up with your little one at peak times!

Practical advice for a peaceful visit to the museum with my child …
The visit must be short! Half an hour – three quarters of an hour maximum – is more than enough. At this age, your toddler cannot concentrate any longer. Don’t turn this moment into a chore …
Don’t forget to bring your blanket, a bottle of water and a snack for a break. A tip: slip into his pocket (after showing him!) a piece of paper with his name and address …
Help your child’s imagination during the museum visit
- Prepare for the visit by arousing their curiosity : talk to him about what he’s going to see, show him books, tell him anecdotes about the artist’s life …
- In front of the paintings, ask her her impressions, “What do you see?”, “Who does this great lady make you think of?” Let him imagine what the characters say or think… The works will come to life!
- Focus his attention on details: the man’s funny hat, this little bird in its cage, the big boat at the back of the picture …
- Try to find him the postcard of the work he preferred and offer it to him. One way to keep an unforgettable memory of your visit!
And now, let’s see what baby took away from his visit! Back home, place it in front of a sheet of paper or plasticine and ask him to reproduce what he saw.
You will be amazed at the works of your budding artist!
