Baby at 4 months: his progress in gross motor skills

Around 4 months, your baby is moving more and more. Like a real little “stuntman”, he certainly turns on his stomach when he is lying on his back, and vice versa. To avoid falling, take great care in the places where you put it.

Your little one also loves to give kicking. He sometimes catches his toes and plays with them. This month or next month he will hold his head straight without support. You also notice other progress. Now, lying on his stomach, your child lifts his head and shoulders while standing on his hands and arms. Lying on the back, he lifts his legs in extension. He also turns his head when he hears a noise.

Now your baby’s hand is gradually becoming an extension of his eyes. We are talking about eye-manuele coordination. And your child makes every effort to grab objects that are out of their reach. Also, if you hand him a toy, he now grabs it with both hands.

Your baby’s health at 4 months

Since last month, your baby has grown 2 to 3 cm. On the weight side, he took between 500 g and 1 kg. At 4 months, the children weigh approximately 6 kg and measure close to 62 cm. At this age, the head circumference of toddlers is, on average, 41 cm. Data which can of course vary according to the babies. 

Schedule a visit to the pediatrician or PMI. Without being compulsory, this examination makes it possible to assess the child’s development.

At 4 months, your child receives their third injection of DTPaP Hib. This vaccine protects against the following diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, haemophilus influenzae b. At this age, your baby is also receiving his second injection of Prevenar which protects pneumococci, as well as the vaccine against hepatitis B. The next booster of these vaccines will take place at 11 months.

Feeding your baby at 4 months

The desirable age to start diversifying baby’s diet is between 4 months and 6 months. Diversification should be done gently, in small doses. At the beginning, we introduce new foods, to make him discover other flavors and textures. It is only after several months that they will participate in the nutritional balance of the child. Infant milk, or breast milk, should remain the basis of your child’s diet.  

His digestive system is maturing and his appetite is gradually being adjusted.. As soon as your baby sees your breast or a bottle, warning signs of a meal, he gets excited. If you want to gently wean your baby, do not hesitate to space your feedings by gradually replacing them with baby bottles. You can just as easily continue breastfeeding if you wish, whether or not you’ve started to diversify your diet.

Your baby’s sleep at 4 months

At 4 months, your baby may be starting to sleep through the night … This doesn’t mean that he sleeps 12 hours at a stretch, just that between about 23 p.m. and 6 or 7 a.m., he doesn’t wake up to nurse or bottle-feed. What to rest, get back in shape and have more moments of complicity with your spouse.

Your child is awake most of the day. Usually babies at this age still take a short nap in the morning, a longer nap in the afternoon, or vice versa. They also often take a nap in the evening.
