The most widely discussed coronavirus variant recently is Omikron BA.5. It replaced other mutations that cause COVID-19 and became the dominant variant, and scientists are trying to determine the characteristic symptoms of infection with this version of Omikron. Symptoms to some extent overlap with those we have already known during the pandemic. However, it’s worth paying attention to the order in which symptoms appear, which can help differentiate COVID-19 from a cold or flu.
- Symptoms of the Omikron BA.5 variant are similar to other symptoms of coronavirus infection that we already learned during the pandemic
- Some symptoms of the BA.5 mutation attract more attention, so it is worth paying attention to severe fatigue, tinnitus or loss of smell
- The order in which symptoms appear may also be a way to diagnose a coronavirus infection

Symptoms most often accompanying the variant Omikron BA.5
The observations so far indicate that the infection with Omicron is milder than the infection caused by the Delta variant of the coronavirus. In the case of Omikron, the set of typical symptoms is also slightly different. People infected with Omikron often report a sore throat and hoarse voice – these symptoms were not as common with previous coronavirus mutations. Less popular in the case of the Omikron variant, although they may still occur, are headaches, fever, brain fog or eye pain.
Much less frequently, the infected report changes in the sense of smell and taste. The symptom, which was one of the most characteristic in the first and second waves of SARS-CoV-2 infections, almost ceased to appear in those infected with the Omikron variant. It is worth noting, however, that in the BA.4 and BA.5 mutations, again slightly more patients complain of problems with taste and smell.
Research has shown that Omikron is much less likely to occupy the lower respiratory tract than Delta. This is why Omikron infections lead to hospitalization in fewer cases – infections reaching the lower respiratory tract usually cause more severe symptoms. Although the Omikron is more contagious than the previous variants, it takes up fewer organs compared to the Delta.
Infection with the Omikron BA.5 sub-variant may be similar to other coronavirus infections, i.e. accompanied by cold symptoms such as headache, body aches, cough, stuffy nose and fatigue. Patients also develop fever, chills, loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting and a scratchy throat.
The dominant symptoms in patients infected with the BA.5 variant include extreme fatigue at an early stage of infection.. It is also worth paying attention to the characteristic symptoms in the form of sleep problems and tinnitus.
If you have symptoms, symptoms that indicate a coronavirus infection, opt for a SARS-CoV-2 test using the Real Time RT-PCR method.
Getting COVID-19 can be associated with a whole host of flu-like symptoms, so it’s easy to mistake it for the flu. Scientists have noted, however, that in the case of coronavirus infection, the order in which the symptoms occur is important. Most often it begins in the respiratory tract, then covers the upper gastrointestinal tract, and finally the lower gastrointestinal tract.
What is the sequence of symptoms of the Omikron BA.5 mutation?
According to research, when infected with COVID-19, the first symptom is most often fever, then coughing, then nausea or vomiting, and finally diarrhea.. This applies to people who develop these ailments. If we are sick, however, it is worth paying attention to whether in our case such a sequence of manifestation of disease symptoms has not occurred. It is so common in coronavirus infection that it is a good starting point for the diagnosis of the disease.
Research shows that the symptoms of Omikron last shorter in vaccinated people.
The least likely symptom sequence for coronavirus infection begins with diarrhea and nausea / vomiting followed by coughing and finally fever.
The scientific analysis shows that in the case of coronavirus infections (COVID-19, MERS or SARS), the first symptom is usually fever, while in the case of flu, cough.
You can minimize the risk of coronavirus infection by wearing masks, e.g. Nexodis Hygenic medical masks or Adrianno Damianii biodegradable protective masks.
