Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic belonging to the ozalide group. It has a bacteriostatic effect that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins. It is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, especially infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract and sexually transmitted diseases.

The drug has a similar spectrum of action to erythromycin, but has a higher resistance to low pH gastric juice. It is active against the following bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus ducreyi, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneu- matoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Myclamydia, Myclamydia, Myclamydia, mycophilus influenzae influenzae, Haemophilus influenzae.

The indication for the use of Azithromycin may be:

  1. bacterial bronchitis,
  2. sinusitis,
  3. interstitial and bronchopneumonia,
  4. pharyngitis,
  5. otitis media
  6. inflammation of tonsils,
  7. community acquired pneumonia,
  8. wandering erythema,
  9. pyoderma,
  10. rose,
  11. common acne,
  12. impetigo,
  13. purulent conjunctivitis,
  14. trachoma conjunctivitis,
  15. mycoplasma i ureplasma,
  16. non-specific urethritis,
  17. chlamydia infection,
  18. gonorrhea.

Contraindications to treatment with Azithromycin:

  1. allergy to the active substance or any other ingredient of the preparation,
  2. hypersensitivity to ketolide and macrolyte antibiotics,
  3. liver dysfunction
  4. electrolyte disturbances (hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia),
  5. circulatory failure,
  6. Heart arythmia.

Antibiotics should not be used during pregnancy, unless there is no other possibility of pharmacotherapy in the individual case.

Azithromycin – possible side effects

The following side effects may occur during treatment with the antibiotic Azithromycin:

  1. gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal pain),
  2. sensitivity to light,
  3. angioedema
  4. abdominal cramps.

Less frequently, the following may occur:

  1. headaches and dizziness,
  2. feeling sleepy
  3. vaginitis,
  4. changes in the sense of smell and taste
  5. anxiety and fear,
  6. hearing impairment
  7. increased level of aggression,
  8. thrombocytopenia,
  9. blurred vision,
  10. heart problems,
  11. lowering blood pressure,
  12. constipation
  13. pseudomembranous colitis,
  14. inflammation of the pancreas,
  15. liver failure
  16. interstitial nephritis,
  17. candidiasis,
  18. allergic skin reactions.

Azithromycin – dosage

The dosage of the antibiotic must be determined by a doctor. In adults, the usual dose is 500 mg once a day for three days or 500 mg once and then 250 mg for 4 days. For the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, a single dose of 1 g is used.

Dosage in children depends on body weight, usually 10 mg per kilogram for three days.

Azithromycin – price

The price of the drug depends on the preparation containing azithromycin. On average, it ranges from about PLN 14 to PLN 30, depending on the fee.
