A fourth dose for every Australian aged 30+

On July 6, experts from the Australian Vaccine Advisory Group issued a recommendation to extend the COVID-19 vaccination booster program. A fourth dose will be made available to anyone over the age of 30, with a special recommendation for those over 50. The Australian Health Minister will be informed about ATAGI’s recommendations on July 7.

Giving a fourth dose to more people is expected to help stop the surge in disease from Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants.

We remind you that people over 65 are eligible from the end of May to the fourth dose. According to estimates, 40 percent. this population has still not benefited from it.

Where is the fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose already common?

Australia is not the only country to make the fourth dose available to younger people. Already in January, Israeli health experts recommended a second booster to all adults aged 18+.

Spain is also planning to launch a second booster dose. In June, the country’s health minister announced that the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine would be applied to the entire population, and that vaccination would begin in the fall with the oldest age groups.

The fourth dose for the younger ones. What about Poland?

Many countries have made the second booster available to high-risk groups. This is what happened, among others in Poland. Since February, it has been given to people over 12 years of age with reduced immunity, whose immune response to vaccination may have been insufficient. From April 20, it can also be accepted by people aged 80+.

The ministry makes the extension of the fourth dose to younger groups dependent on the decision of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). «The decision to use the fourth dose for the 18+ population will be made only after the end of clinical trials by pharmaceutical companies. We hope that it should happen soon, but until the end of this research, there will be no EMA decision pointing to the widespread use of the fourth vaccination »- explained Wojciech Andrusiewicz, spokesman for the Ministries of Health in June.
