Aulin – composition and action of the drug
The active substance of Aulin, which has an analgesic and antipyretic effect, is nimesulide. One tablet contains 100 mg of active ingredient. One sachet also contains 100 mg of nimesulide.
Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug belonging to the sulfoanilides. Drugs containing nimesulide have been available for sale since 1985. It is worth mentioning, however, that the use of nimesulide is currently limited as there is a risk of liver damage when taking it. There are only a few preparations available on the Polish pharmaceutical market, the active substance of which is nimesulide.
Nimesulide, like other NSAIDs, has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties.
It works by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins from lipids in cell membranes. There are at least 2 isoforms of this enzyme COX-1 and COX-2. NSAIDs differ in the specificity of their action against these two isoforms of cyclooxygenase. Classic NSAIDs are active against both COX-1 and COX-2 isoforms. It should be emphasized, however, that nimesulide has a preferential effect over COX-2, and its effect on COX-1 is significantly smaller.
The COX-2 preference promotes the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis selectively in inflammatory tissues. The inhibition of COX-2 activity underlies the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of nimesulide. In addition, nimesulide comprehensively inhibits the action of other inflammatory mediators.
The analgesic effectiveness of nimesulide can be compared to naproxen, diclofenac or ibuprofen.
Nimesulide is well and quickly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is characterized by a very fast analgesic effect, the onset of which occurs as early as 15 minutes after oral administration of the drug. The maximum concentration in the blood is obtained within 2-3 hours after administration of the preparation.
Due to the safety profile, its use is limited to second-line treatment.
The composition of Aulin also includes auxiliary substances. In the case of Aulin tablets these are sodium docusate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, sodium carboxymethyl starch (type A), microcrystalline cellulose, hydrogenated vegetable oil and magnesium stearate.
Aulin granules in the composition contains such ingredients as: sucrose, maize starch, spray-dried liquid glucose, macrogol cetostearyl ether, anhydrous citric acid and orange flavor.
