Another weekly report by the Ministry of Health and another record for the sixth wave of COVID-19. The last seven days brought (officially) almost 22 thousand. new cases, previously there were 19,5 thousand. The peak of the summer wave is expected this month. The question is, exactly at what point in the epidemic are we? The current R index for Poland may surprise. It shows a phenomenon that gives hope.
- The R indicator tells us how many healthy people can be infected by one person infected with the coronavirus
- When the value of the R index does not exceed one, it can be assumed that the epidemic is getting weaker, if it exceeds one – it grows stronger
- According to the Ministry of Health data sent to Medonet on July 30, the current R for Poland is 1,16. This is not good news, but it also shows a positive development
- You can find more such stories on the Onet homepage.
Current R index for Poland. What is happening in voivodships?
The Ministry of Health sent the MedTvoiLokony editorial office the latest R (virus reproduction rate, RO) for Poland. As of July 30, it is 1,16. This is an average number from all voivodships.
It is one of the elements used to assess the epidemiological situation in a given country. Thanks to it, we know how many healthy people can be infected by one person infected with the coronavirus. If the R is above one, we know that the epidemic is growing. When the RO is less than one, we can think that the epidemic is dying out and fewer and fewer people are getting infected from each other.
The worst situation is currently in the eastern provinces. The highest R indicator has the Podkarpackie voivodship (RO at 1,36). Podlaskie voivodship is second in order (1,32), and the third – Lublin voivodeship (1,28). This is exactly the situation in the provinces:

Current R for Poland: good news and bad news
The bad news is that Poland’s current R is still above one. As mentioned above, it is a sign that more and more people are getting infected from each other. The COVID-19 epidemic is growing.
However, there is also reason to be optimistic. Although RO still exceeds one, its value is lower than at the beginning of the second half of July, namely on July 19. On that day, the Ministry of Health informed us that the RO for Poland is 1,49. These data show that although the coronavirus epidemic in Poland is developing, the pace of these increases is slowing down. This is confirmed by the RO values for Poland of 14 and seven days (1,41 and 1,28, respectively).
Last week, the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, spoke about it. “We observe one positive phenomenon – the slowing down of the dynamics of growth from week to week in the number of new cases”.
Dr. Grzesiowski: we have a rapidly growing “ghost wave”
There is a problem though. As Dr. Aneta Afelt emphasized in an interview with Medonet, “monitoring of infections in Poland is only conventional”. The immunologist Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski also referred to this in social media: we have a rapidly growing “ghost wave”, because according to official statistics – peace “.
In another entry, the doctor added: “Two parallel worlds: officially in the system of 14 thousand. tests a day, approx. 3-5 thousand infections; outside the 40 thousand system daily tests bought in pharmacies, approx. 20-30 thousand infections, and in fact 100-150 thousand. A summer wave of infections as in mid-January ’22, which is confirmed by sewage studies ».
«Yes, the rate of build-up of this wave is faster, not only because of the lack of containment, but also because of the higher infectivity of BA.5 and its longer elimination. Many people do not isolate themselves, and after a few days of sickness at most, they return to work, and they can continue to be contagious. Let’s test ourselves! » – urges the doctor.
