AstraZeneca. The benefits of vaccination with this preparation outweigh the risks

The benefits of administering the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine outweigh its risks; for now, we recommend continuing vaccinations with this preparation – WHO reported on Wednesday. Some EU countries temporarily withdrew from the use of substances after being informed of possible side effects.

«Vaccination against Covid-19 does not reduce the risk of illness and death from other diseases»- underlines in the announcement of the World Health Organization (WHO).

As a preventive measure, some countries in the European Union temporarily suspended the use of AstraZeneki after reports of rare cases of blood clots in people who received the vaccine. WHO points out that other EU countries, after analyzing the same data, decided to continue vaccination with this substance.

On Tuesday, the head of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Emer Cooke, announced that there are currently no indications that vaccination with AstraZeneki caused blood clots. She added that the number of thromboembolic events in vaccinated people did not seem to be higher than in the general population. As of March 10, 30 such cases out of 5 million people vaccinated were reported to EMA. Cooke noted that there are currently more such notifications, but it is difficult to present a specific number.

Blood clots are a common medical condition worldwide

The WHO recalls that venous thromboembolism is the third most common cardiovascular disease in the world, and that blood clots are a common medical condition.

“During large-scale vaccination campaigns, national authorities routinely highlight possible undesirable side effects. This does not necessarily mean that these events are related to the vaccination itself, but researching them is good practice »explains the WHO. The Organization’s Vaccine Safety Advisory Committee is carefully examining the latest available information on the safety of AstraZeneki, the WHO added.

WHO will make the results of this review public as soon as it is completed, the document says. The organization was reported to be in contact with the EMA and national regulators around the world for the latest information on vaccine safety.

“At the moment, the WHO believes that the benefits of the AstraZeneki vaccine outweigh the risks and recommends continued vaccination,” reads the organisation’s press release.
