Aspirin during pregnancy; how does aspirin affect pregnancy

Aspirin is contraindicated for the expectant mother, as it can harm her and the developing fetus. But in some pathologies, taking aspirin during pregnancy is justified. So that the medicine does not harm the baby, it should be prescribed only by a doctor and in a minimum dosage.

How does aspirin affect pregnancy?

This drug should not be taken especially in the first and third trimesters. But taking it in the second trimester should also be associated with serious reasons.

Aspirin during pregnancy is prescribed in exceptional cases.

Taking the drug in the first trimester can lead to:

  • fetal heart defects;
  • cleft upper lip and palate;
  • lack of an eyeball;
  • spine pathologies;
  • growth retardation.

Aspirin during pregnancy in the last trimester can cause:

  • pathology of the heart and lungs of the fetus;
  • cerebral hemorrhage in the fetus;
  • fetal liver damage;
  • placental abruption;
  • uterine bleeding in the expectant mother;
  • premature birth or overmaturity;
  • inhibition of labor;
  • fetal death.

Doctors from Denmark, after conducting research, came to the conclusion that taking aspirin by an expectant mother can cause reproductive disorders in the future in a male child.

When is aspirin prescribed during pregnancy?

Side effects of the drug during pregnancy are associated with the usual doses of more than 300 mg per day. For a pregnant woman, the drug is prescribed in special cases in minimal doses not exceeding 100 mg per day.

Aspirin in this dosage is prescribed by a doctor for:

  • Increased blood clotting and thrombophlebitis. The medicine improves blood circulation, thins the blood and prevents blood clots.
  • Varicose veins. The drug thins the blood and eases the course of the disease. But doctors still try to prescribe safer remedies for pregnant women and recommend using more blood-thinning foods – kiwi, cranberries, tomatoes, herbs, carrots, beets, ginger.
  • Placental insufficiency. The drug normalizes blood flow and oxygen supply to the child, prevents early aging of the placenta.
  • Severe form of late toxicosis, associated with increased blood pressure.
  • Rheumatic diseases.

The drug helps to reduce blood viscosity in order to protect the expectant mother and baby from serious cardiovascular complications. But if possible, aspirin is replaced with safer drugs.

To prevent aspirin from causing harm during pregnancy, it is important to take it strictly as prescribed by your doctor and in the minimum dosage.
