Asparagus is an ornamental deciduous plant with more than 300 species. They are quite different in appearance, but they always look original.

Indoor asparagus resembles a fern with weightless lace leaves that form a beautiful green cloud. In fact, these are not leaves, but modified shoots.

Under favorable conditions in summer, asparagus will delight you with small white or pinkish flowers with a delicate aroma. After the plant has faded, red or black berries are formed on it. If they ripen successfully, the seeds can be used for planting.

Care and maintenance of asparagus

  • The plant is light-requiring, but protection from direct sun is recommended. Grows well on windowsill in the north-east or north-west directions. Shading is required on the southern windows. In winter, the plant should be rearranged as close to the light source as possible.

  • Asparagus does not tolerate cold; make sure that the temperature in the room does not drop below 10 degrees, otherwise the flower will die.

  • The soil for the flower should be loose; leaf and garden soil with the addition of peat and sand is used to create an earthen mixture.

  • Asparagus is transplanted in the spring as the bush grows, dividing the adult specimen, carefully clearing the roots from the old substrate. The pot needs to be taken a little larger than the previous one. Reproduction by seeds is also possible, they can be planted in loose peat soil.

  • Watering is required abundant, uniform, but without waterlogging. Lack of moisture, as well as excess, will cause yellowing and shedding of the shoots.

  • Homemade asparagus needs feeding. In summer, fertilizers are applied weekly; in winter, it is enough to fertilize the flower once a month.

Asparagus also has enemies, lovers to feast on its foliage:

  • aphid;

  • thrips;

  • spider mite.

If you notice pests, you should spray the flower with special products for indoor plants.
