Asamax are gastro-resistant tablets containing the active substance mesalazine, which has a direct anti-inflammatory effect. Asamax gastro-resistant tablets inhibit the development of the disease process in the intestines. Asamax can be used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis in both the acute phase and the remission phase of the disease. An indication for taking Asamax may also be Crohn’s disease within the colon (both in the acute phase and in the phase of remission of the disease).
Asamax – mechanism of action
Mesalazine is the active breakdown product of sulfasalazine action is based on the inhibition of leukocyte chemotaxis (movement in response to a chemical directional stimulus), reduction of the production of cytokines and leukotrienes, and the removal of free radicals. However, the mechanism actions mesalazine is not fully understood; It most likely consists in inhibiting cyclic lipid oxygenase and oxygenase, and consequently – the synthesis of inflammatory mediators (prostaglandin PGE2, prostacyclin PGI2, thromboxane A2, leukotriene B4) and inhibition of oxidation reactions in the colon mucosa.
Found in gastro-resistant tablets, mesalazine is released in the final section of the small intestine and the initial section of the large intestine. The product is available on prescription. The manufacturer of Asamax is Astellas Pharma Sp. z o. o.
