As many as 20 dietary supplements will disappear from pharmacies. These are popular preparations [LIST]

Soon we will not be able to buy some dietary supplements. The list of products that will be withdrawn from sale is long. This includes preparations that are supposed to help control the level of cholesterol in the blood.

  1. On June 22, 2022, a regulation of the European Commission enters into force, according to which preparations containing 3 mg or more of monacolin will be withdrawn from pharmacies – reminds the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate
  2. Monacolin K is used in the production of supplements to lower cholesterol. Experts have found that using it in doses above 3 mg can cause serious side effects
  3. There must be warnings on the packaging of monacolin preparations, e.g. for pregnant women, as well as information on the permissible dose
  4. More important information can be found on the main page of TvoiLokony

The European Commission regulation says that a single portion of the dietary supplement intended for daily consumption must contain less than 3 mg of monacoline. All products containing 3 mg or more of monacolin in a daily dose cannot be sold.

In 2011, the European Food Safety Authority issued a health claim which confirmed the lowering effect of total cholesterol and LDL lipoprotein in the blood of monacolin in a daily dose of 10 mg. Now the daily dose has been lowered more than threefold.

What is monacoline?

Monacolin K is used in the production of dietary supplements that lower cholesterol. Monacolin K is a biologically active substance that is present in red yeast fermented rice. It is called a natural statin because it works similarly to statins, drugs most often prescribed to lower blood cholesterol levels by reversibly blocking a key enzyme involved in the production of cholesterol within the human body.

According to more recent findings of the European Food Safety Authority The use of monacolin at a dose of 10 mg a day, and in some cases even 3 mg a day, may cause side effectsincluding muscle breakdown, hepatitis and skin conditions. Therefore, the use of this substance above 3 mg per day will be prohibited.
